To. If it is said that there is no non-difference in the ultimate truth, then it is said to be the ultimate truth. What is called "that is so" is non-difference. For example, water and milk, by their nature, are the basis for the realization of wetness, and by the same nature, they are the basis for producing rotten fruit. Likewise, by their nature, they are recognized from rotten fruit. Similarly, although fire is different, by the part that is the cause of the realization of fire, by its nature, it is separated from other things and is the basis for the realization of ghee. By acting according to its nature, it is its basis. Recognition from the sign of smoke is also by its nature, otherwise it is not. If asked, how is it recognized from smoke by its nature? It is said to be "knowing the branch by fire." Because it is only the knowledge that accomplishes the special attachment to fire that arises together with the difference of firewood, and smoke arises dependent on other things, therefore there is no confusion between smoke and fire. Therefore, fire is recognized from smoke by its nature. If asked, how does smoke not confuse its own cause, and other fruits are also established as non-confusing in the same way? The explanation is: it is "as it is." If asked, although different, what is the basis for the non-difference of recognizing water? Because it is separated from other non-wet things. What is called "other things" is precisely the separation from things that are not the cause of the realization of fire. What is called "itself" is that fire is recognized from smoke by the cause of the realization of fire itself. If asked, why? It is said to be "otherwise." The second chapter of Pramāṇavārttika explains: it is "by fire." If asked, how does smoke not confuse? Because it also arises from the crown of Indra and so on. The answer is: it is like this. It is the change of smoke and firewood, because whatever the cause, it is relied upon to establish fire. If it is thought that in the realm of confusion, the crown of Indra is not fire, then what is thought to be smoke at that time is not smoke, therefore there is no confusion. If it is said that what is born from other things is also smoke, then the cause of smoke that is clearly thought of at that time is fire itself, so where would there be confusion of smoke that is different in kind from fire?

It is not like that. This "from where" etc. is an argument. Saying the definite aspect is "elsewhere." "Then" is the answer. "There" means not blue. The doubt is "If so," that is, it becomes something else. "The answer is smoke." It does not arise in other places and times, so it will not become smoke. The refutation and examination of "this from where" is the same as other blue. If, like in other places etc., smoke also arises from things other than fire, then refuting and understanding in this way, then blue will also become other appearances in other places etc., thus refuting and examining, because there is no difference. If the argument of saying etc., the meaning is this: blue is the nature of blue itself, how can it not exist? The thing that is expressed by its own nature will not not exist. What makes it not exist, makes it produce non-existence, this is not the characteristic of things. Therefore, abandoning what is produced by the cause that is desired to appear, even if it is admitted that it is produced by other causes, there is no fault. There also refers to smoke. "Nature" etc., the meaning is this: the characteristic of the thing itself is only produced by the cause, and the opposite of this is the characteristic of the non-existence of the thing. If it is not like this, then things and other things cannot be distinguished. Distinction refers to the distinction made by the cause that produces confusion and other things. "In this way, if the reason of the cause does not exist, it will not arise, then how to understand the reason of nature?" The doubt is "nature." "This non-existence will not arise, but also depends on how the self is measured, so that it can be understood," the answer is "how." Having said that the non-existence of the two reasons of cause and nature will not arise, now is the occasion and combination: because in this way it is only following, not not returning.
