It is, called "if". However, although it does not do things in a general sense, if it is said that this is not a mistake, then, where is the word "for"? It means being able to do things. Called "for others" refers to the general. Called "if" refers to the argument. Called "general" refers to the answer. Called "for others" refers to the clear. Other is general. Saying too much is called "all certain". Avoiding this is called "why". Called "craving" refers to similarity, that is, the dharma-possessor who possesses dharma, this itself is what is said, called "like this". What kind of special exists in what kind of general? Called "that" refers to that special itself that sees the general. Why doubt that itself? Doubt is called "existence and". By what seeing that does one become doubtful about that? What exists in what and is also delusion? Called "for the general also". Because it is the occasion, this called "existence" indicates approaching delusion. Showing this meaning itself specially is called "the cow itself". Called "general" refers to merely not seeing, by that certainty, how can one doubt the special? Answering, it is called "variegated". The other general is not present in this special. Called "other again" refers to mistakenly thinking of the cow itself as another tree itself. One should not recognize the general through other means either, it is said, called "or". Closely summarizing the occasion is, called "therefore". The difference of the special is qualities and the general and so on. It is a sign therefore. Called "without doubt" refers to because it has definite knowledge and aim, therefore all self is certain. Called "thing" refers to the argument. Called "becoming what kind" refers to when saying "blue", not knowing whether it is the special thing of the blue lotus, or another appearance, therefore, in order to show the special thing of the blue lotus, the sound of the blue lotus shows the special of the blue lotus. Called "if" refers to if the sound of blue has already understood the meaning specialized by a special as its own nature, then, at that time, the special of the blue lotus is also merely showing the special, therefore that blue other special is the blue lotus itself.

English

Then, from the sound of Utpala, in what way does one understand the other nature that has never existed before? If it cannot be understood, then it is meaningless. However, the sound of 'blue' understands the characteristic of the blue characteristic itself, but not the characteristic of Utpala. Therefore, to welcome and dispel the doubt that 'the sound of Utpala is meaningless,' there is the word 'however.' When the sound of 'blue' is associated with the characteristic of 'blue,' if it is understood that 'that meaning is in other aspects' and is associated with the characteristic of Utpala itself, then, at that time, other characteristics are associated with Utpala itself, and from the sound of Utpala, it is understood that 'in other aspects,' it is not possible to make it the characteristic of Utpala itself. The previous verse welcomes the doubt of the reply that it is meaningless, and that is the meaning of the word 'however.' The sound of Utpala, for things, only understands the association with the generality of Utpala itself, and it cannot understand that the characteristic of that thing will be indicated by the sound of 'blue.' Therefore, it is thought that the sound of Utpala is not meaningless. If that is the case, for the answer 'if that is the case,' the meaning is this: if it is only understood as having Utpala itself, and not the clear manifestation of Utpala, then at that time, since it is not established, it will not enter into it. Since it does not exist, it will not be obtained either. If it is said that the characteristic is only doing things, then it is 'due to the difference of characteristics.' The explanation of the first verse is: 'If it is through its way,' that is, through the characteristic of Utpala. 'It is not an obstacle,' that is what is said. Why? Because of 'characteristic.' Because the previous characteristic, that is, blue itself, has already been understood by the thing itself that the sound of 'blue' is to express. Therefore, the sound of Utpala expressing other characteristics is completely meaningless, that is its meaning. The explanation of the first half of the second verse is: 'However.' 'Other characteristics' refers to being separated from the characteristic of Utpala. Placing the debater himself in the power of the established tenet, that is 'even so.' Therefore, it is thought that the sound of Utpala is not meaningless. The latter half is explained
