Because it is not the nature of the knowledge that arises at the time of production. Some things that arise immediately have existence, which is following. Some things that exist also do not exist, which is contradictory. The knowledge of the difference established by those, wherever it exists, is called that. Not all things that arise immediately produce knowledge, but only some. Therefore, it is called that because the established difference exists. The meaning of "how to understand" etc. is this: merely by arising immediately, sound is not proven to be impermanent. That is also not accomplished by this, because the knowledge that arises immediately is uncertain as to whether it is the result of permanence or impermanence. The disputant says uncertainty, that is also so, it is said by the author of reasoning. The result of effort is diverse, because there are various results due to distinctions such as manifestation. Saying that is also manifestation, effort is like knowledge, and sometimes it is also the meaning of things. The effort of a person raising a lamp does not produce a pot, but it makes it known. Saying that, the pot is the result of the potter, is according to the situation. The two say the result of things and knowledge. The one who explains separately is the recluse. If it is not like that, then permanence is not reasonable. From the words of the maker, sound cannot be established as a result, saying that sound is the maker. Why is that? Because combination etc. is the meaning of the maker. Then how is permanence established? Sound is permanence itself. Therefore, it is said, because it is established by recognition. Not only lightning etc., but sound is also permanent. Effort is to make it manifest, not to make it produced. Like what? Like the manifestation of a pot from a lamp. Whose is this manifestation? And what is its nature?

Regarding the nature of permanence and the object of perception, it is said that it is established by the example of a pot. That is, it is established by the valid cognition that recognizes a pot, possessing the valid cognition that recognizes a pot, and possessing the time of perceiving and not perceiving "this and that." The so-called "again" refers to the subsequent object of perception being manifest. Why is it manifest? Because it does not have a nature more manifest than the proximate object of perception, that is, its own self-nature, therefore it is manifest. Similarly, if it is established that it exists in the time of perceiving and not perceiving, then the previously existing pot will become manifest due to approaching some causes such as lighting a lamp, but the previously existing pot itself is not the result. Applying it to the meaning, similarly, even if there is a newly produced consciousness, it is not the result of sound. If sound is permanent, then the consciousness of the previously existing sound will not necessarily be merely newly produced. Why? Because effort has no effect whatsoever on the obscurer, the sense faculty, and the sound. This refutation is also based on the admission that effort can make it manifest, but it is not effort that makes it manifest, but merely the result of effort. Like what? For example, the effort of a potter, which is a refutation of the Samkhya school's view. Why? Because if it is thought that the causes are not meaningless in order to make the collection of causes manifest, then it is "all." The question is, the cause, that is, the lump of clay, can only be determined to be a pot, not wood. If it is not so, then it is not dependent on the maker. Determination refers to the established conclusion. Any determination made by the maker is non-existent, that is its meaning. Why? Just like this, the potter cannot merely make a pot except to prevent the lump of clay from becoming wood, etc. Such a determination of self-nature does not exist, but such a determination is merely the exclusion of others. Such a
