If it is thought that one should prevent that and otherness, then it is said, "In the ultimate sense." The intention of the commentator is this meaning: What is shown by the mind that understands the conventional, the characteristics of dharma and the possessor of dharma, whatever that and otherness exist in various ways for all things, that will be prevented in the nature of the ultimate truth, whatever is shown by the mind with discrimination, that is not the ultimate truth, this is to show this meaning. How to prevent it? It is said, "In the ultimate sense, if one examines." The meaning is that direct perception does not hold dharma and the possessor of dharma as different. Therefore, for the mind of discrimination, it appears that what is desired and the possessor of dharma are different, so it can be denied like that, this is to eliminate this dispute. Difference is only existence. However, that is not the reason for the ultimate truth. Jayanta explains in another way: If it is admitted that it is different in the conventional, then in this case, how can it be said that all the different things such as dharmas have not been established? If one doubts that whatever is established in the conventional is also established in the ultimate truth, then in the ultimate sense, if one examines, the appearance of the genus and that, that is, its nature, for example, saying "spotted cow," etc., and otherness, that is, the appearance of the genus, etc., as different, for example, saying "this is the cow itself," etc., then that and self and otherness will be prevented. By what reason is it prevented? Because direct perception has not established that it is like that. From what object does it dwell and prevent? On conventional things, that is, on things that arise from the habits of discrimination. Starting from "exists in the conventional" to "difference is established by discrimination," is the explanation of the conventional. Following and contradicting are following and contradicting. That "also" is general. The thing that is completely transformed by the discrimination that is thought to be "is a cow," the nature of self, etc., is not obvious, only appears as the ultimate of appearance, that is the general, that is its meaning. How to understand following and contradicting? It is said, "Like this." "Not from outside the appearance" means not from outside one appearance.

That which is called "distinctly abiding" refers to the general and the manifest. So, the reason for saying "so" is because there is no oneness. Next, explaining "that is in the ultimate sense": So, because it is established by conceptual thought, therefore, distinctness is not apprehended by direct perception in the ultimate sense. If even though it is established by conceptual thought, why is it not ultimate? Because of what reason. The inference that follows after direct perception, the distinctness that it involves is also ultimate, thus connect. Therefore, the intention is that what is established by conceptual thought is not ultimate. The reason for saying "therefore" is that because there is no establishment of distinctness in the ultimate sense, therefore, from the nature of the dharma, the establisher of this distinctness, that is, the nature of the sign, the pervasiveness of the dharma, etc., is the essence that abides in the conventional, that is, the entity that possesses existence, that whose reality is itself. The meaning is that it exists in the conventional. From the nature of the dharma, thatness and otherness, in the nature of distinctness and non-distinctness, in that, that is, in the ultimate sense, there is no establisher of the establishment of being made, etc. So, what is the examined or the ultimate? It is merely from conceptual thought, having become distinct from the dharma, and in the ultimate sense, the manifest object abides. The dharma of being made, etc., is the distinctness examined from the dharma sound, and in the manifestation of sound, it is only the unexamined. This shows that because only the self-character is established by direct perception, it is ultimate, but it is not the dharma of kinds, etc., because it is established by conceptual thought. So, the reason for saying "so" is because it is itself. Having thus spoken of the self-character being established by direct perception, speaking of being established by inference, is "direct perception preceding." By direct perception, in valid cognition, etc., the manifestation of fire and smoke, etc., which are excluded from dissimilar kinds, are established in relation, and at other times, on mountains, etc., only the manifestation is established from smoke. Those who seek meaning are for the sake of entering into that itself. It is not to establish the general, because that is the object, those who seek meaning do not desire. The object of the inference of the general
