The meaning is thus. Because that is not seen, that thing is grasping at its own nature, but not as the object of grasping, therefore it is grasping at its own nature. In order to eliminate and dispel the doubt that merely being the object of grasping is the thing, therefore it is said, "merely as the object of grasping." That itself is the appearance. In order to raise and eliminate the argument that "merely the image of the grasper can approximately represent the thing," therefore it is said, "how." "By another" means by the image of the grasped. "Another" means different from the image of the grasped. "A thing not understood by seeing can also be understood by conceptual thought," in order to eliminate this doubt, it is said, "thing." "This knowledge is not merely seen in a dream," it is not right to say so. Therefore, that is merely knowledge. Then, is that a name and sign having the nature of blue, etc.? Thinking this, therefore it is said, "by this." Because it shows the uncommon nature and not seeing the grasped. Furthermore, it means according to another view of the first chapter of the Pramāṇavārttika that will be explained, this wisdom of knowledge, for what reason is it considered to be in accordance with the desired thing? It is not because it appears as the grasped, because it is common with dreams, etc. Without harm is also not deceiving. It is only not deceiving, and that is also the ultimate result of attainment, saying thus is "if the thing has function." For others, it is dream and general knowledge, etc. Hearing meaningless things is because there is no reason. That which is said by "another," etc. That itself, when explaining the Pramāṇavārttika, is said to be "another." "For this" is to establish this as being produced by the thing. However, by what is it established in this way? If one doubts that it is only that the eye and other knowledges have differences, therefore it is said, "appearance itself." "Following" is to eliminate the doubt of having differences. If one asks, "how is it seen," the answer is, "like this." Previously, it was from the beginning of attainment. Neither oneself nor others see through direct perception, saying thus is "oneself."

It is called 'by'. It is inferred from the power of reversing such appearances. The consciousness of the eye, etc., although it has the meaning of the difference that is spoken of, the consciousness of dreams is meaningless. If that is the case, it is called 'if that is the case'. This distinction of having an object, etc., is also not to be transcended by the conventional. Saying this is 'like this'. Here, 'for the meaningless' refers to the consciousness of dreams, because there is no meaning to be done. Or, if according to others, it is thought that all consciousness has an object, so there is no difference in recognition, then it is said like this. Here it refers to the consciousness of dreams. What is seen in dreams is habit, that is, from the power of previous habits, what makes me appear like this? It will become such a thought. But for the discriminating mind of waking, it will not become a thought of thinking like that. Therefore, even according to others, there is indeed a difference in recognition. If it is said that from which mind it is considered that having an object itself does not exist here, then what was seen before, I saw it, such a mind, is for the specific situation. Or saying 'I remember', or saying 'this thing is not worldly', these are not minds. Or, even if there is no such mind, but because it causes harm, it is recognized that it is not worldly. Then, what causes harm? Or, because it would fall into a meaningless state, it is worldly. Even if that is admitted, the unwanted result will come, saying this is 'for that', that is, for causing harm. You are also not saying that it appears reversed, because it has been admitted that it is not worldly. Or, if for the thing that causes harm, it is admitted that it is a reversed appearance, then for the thing that should cause harm, why not admit it like that? This refers to what has already been refuted. Precisely for this reason, to welcome the doubt of returning from the reversed appearance is 'that too'. The consciousness of dreams is not only worldly, but from the point of being worldly, it is recognized as worldly itself.
