Thus spoke "Brahmin." How does one understand the name that is closely associated with the Brahmin boy? Just as grasping through the designation of a name, similarly, the meaning is not grasped by a confused understanding arising from sound. Therefore, grasping name and characteristic is grasping meaning through close association, which is the meaning of this. However, even if one grasps name and characteristic, is it not the case that one is not confused about the meaning due to extreme familiarity? This doubt is the meaning of "extreme." From what does it arise? This is the answer. "It is not the case that it transforms into a nature of non-confusion due to extreme familiarity." Why is that? It is said, "Because there is no valid cognition." Explaining this, it is "by valid cognition." "Thus" means in the very object of meditation. "Otherwise" means without understanding. "Since name and characteristic are not objects of valid cognition, they are not objects of familiarity," this is the intention. In conventional truth, is the valid cognition that establishes it established from the very fact that it is otherwise unreasonable? To dispel this doubt, it is "otherwise, it is conventional truth." "It is not" is the answer. "Even if it is not so" means even if there are no name and characteristic. "It will be explained" means by "as long as it is one's own nature," and so on. To dispel the doubt for the sake of explaining the similarity or dissimilarity in knowledge, it is "by what?" "In knowledge" is establishing what is to be explained. "If, like name and characteristic, it is equally refuted here as well?" "By the power of habit." "From where does this arise?" The answer is "like this." "By others" means by name and characteristic. "Understanding name and characteristic is not a part of conventional truth, but understanding is only knowledge," to show this meaning, "name and characteristic" is said. To speak of the meaning of dispelling the first conceptual thought, it is "if." "Not understanding is not a part of conventional truth," thinking that it is refuted by just that much. "How is it that one does not understand the very meaning?" Thus he said, "By one's own nature." "That is not" means not name and characteristic. "For what reason is it that one does not particularly cling to the nature of others in things? For that reason." "Name and characteristic are" means the name understood by conceptual thought.

It is a state of clarity. This is called conceptualization. Why? Because it is said there that names, etc., are cognized by conceptualization. Names and characteristics are also called. The state of things is called following. Why? Because it is unreasonable to conceptualize the state of things, because it only holds its own nature. For admitting the state of things itself, refutation will also be stated. Knowledge itself is called not things, nor names, etc. Therefore, it is called because of that reason. The remaining flesh in the middle is called without state, and the meaning of existing between them. There is no name elsewhere, the root of this will be explained, knowledge is the state of things itself, this is reasonable, because it is cognized by the self-cognizing measure, saying this is called arising from sound. By what will the collection of senses become without fruit, that state of things itself is not a thing. However, the knowledge produced indirectly through things is a confused state of things, it is reasonable to say this, because it is established by measure. If it is thought that names and characteristics are also established as the state of things, then it is said that the names and characteristics cognized by conceptualization are confused, therefore they are the state of things, these are established from these, but not from names and characteristics themselves the meaning of the state of things. If you doubt why, the answer is stated in the root, because the mind does not admit. Whatever nature is not experienced, that is not its cognitive function, this is necessary. For the aspect of no state, also holding, that itself admits and then answers itself, that is the thing. If the measure of names and characteristics is the knowledge of conceptualization, then how does it hold the nature of existence? How does it hold as the state of things itself? By what will the thing of knowledge itself be confusedly recognized like a state? Therefore, for names and characteristics being the state of things, there is completely nothing. If the state of things is different from names and characteristics, then there is no measure.
