Generally, since the universal is the common essence of all things, it is therefore conceived as being dependent on things. However, this is not clear. This clarifies why the nature of knowledge itself is not considered to be an actual entity of external objects. If the nature of knowledge itself does not possess clarity, then why would it be considered so? If there is doubt about this, the answer is: knowledge is by its very nature. However, if its appearance of clarity is like other things, because it does not exist, then how could this be? The answer is: its very appearance of clarity. If the nature of knowledge is not suitable for being unclear, then what is the appearance of being unclear? The answer is: things. This refers to the knowledge of the universal. Why? The answer is: depending on other things, this refers to the sense consciousness. If it is said that the aspect of knowledge does not change in that way, then the answer is: the aspect of knowledge. Therefore, this is because there is no other thing. However, the aspects of all things also appear in the knowledge of the universal, so how does it apprehend? The answer is: the nature of things, meaning that the nature of wisdom is like appearing in the sense consciousness. Other refers to: from the nature appearing in the knowledge of the universal. It does not appear means: the nature does not appear. If the nature of knowledge is its own characteristic, then how could it be the nature of knowledge? The answer is: the very essence. Explaining this in its own words is: through analysis. Through it itself, both can be established, meaning: ascertained as things. If because it appears as things, then how could it be the nature of both? The answer is: it also is. This refers to the knowledge of the universal. If even after definitively examining things, how would this become a certain aspect? To address this question, the answer is: like this. For all things that arise from grass and arise from leaves, there is attachment to the aspect of discrimination such as "fire, fire," due to the similarity of those (things), especially clinging to its universal. After stating the nature of establishment, which is the universal, to show the nature of elimination, it is said: from the dissimilar kinds of those things.

It depends on whatever is different. The dependence of cognition is twofold: arising from it and entering into it. Therefore, because it is associated with difference and because of the very nature of difference, it is the general aspect. That which is called "sharp" is completely related. The eye consciousness, with whatever sandalwood and so forth, lion and so forth exist, its nature is the same. If someone thinks, how is the sameness of nature established? It is said, "appearance." Because the nature of cognition is understood as the common nature of all things. If it is not grasped, how can it be said to be the object of all things? Therefore, it is said, "especially attached to the one." If someone thinks, how is this? It is said, "appearance." If someone thinks that even if the nature of cognition is especially attached to things, how does generality exist? Because there is no characteristic of generality that is admitted by others. If someone thinks that the characteristic of generality that he speaks of exists only in this, then what is said is "as follows." If someone thinks, what will be accomplished by this? It is said, "that is also the aspect of cognition," that is, the nature of similar things is generality. If someone thinks, how is it that of the bright ones? It is said, "in the nature of brightness," that is, the special aspect of cognition that has become a general aspect is the general nature, this is the connection. If someone thinks that the special cognition of aspect is the self, then how is this a general aspect? It is said, "variegated and so forth." If someone thinks, how does it exist in it? It is said, "through false special attachment." If someone thinks, what is the reason for special attachment there? It is said, "for it," that is, for things. From it, that is, from things. If someone thinks, will it be discriminated after arising directly? It is said, "habit." Thus, having made appearance and what is to be discriminated one, the nature that is established is what is generally spoken of. Showing the generality of the nature of difference is "that." That is the aspect of cognition. If someone thinks that since the nature of things is not touched, how does it arise depending on it and their difference? It is said, "that is through indirect." Having explained that the characteristic of arising from it is dependence, explaining entering into it, that is, the different.
