That which is called "this" is the apprehender. The nature of form, etc., and the apprehender are one and the same. As stated by the teacher Dignāga. That which is called "that" is the preceding consciousness. "Because it is not an object" means because it is separate from the aspect of an object. Why is this very thing established as a thesis? "From that" means arising from the first consciousness. "That" refers to whatever is the aspect of the meaning and the aspect of awareness of the preceding consciousness. When the consciousness of consciousness, which is characterized by memory, arises, "that" means it becomes endowed with the aspect of the preceding consciousness. For example, the consciousness arising from a distant tree becomes endowed with the aspect of the tree. "That which abides" means the abiding of the object itself is the nature of that consciousness. If one thinks that consciousness is definitely conceptualizing in the nature of pleasure, etc., then "pleasure, etc." is mentioned. "Pleasure, etc." means explanation. "To you" means to those who possess reason, etc. However, even though pleasure, etc., are objects, consciousness is not different from them; rather, they are the same. If one thinks, "How is that?" "Both" means pleasure, etc., and blue, etc. However, pleasure, etc., alone are the apprehender of blue, etc. Therefore, if one thinks that consciousness is only conceptualization, separate from blue, etc., then it is called "pleasure, etc." "Even without that" means even without pleasure, etc., the distinction of one's own essence is made by the nature of clarity. That without means without the nature of clarity, because there is no apprehender. Blue, etc., are what is hidden and not manifest; without the nature of clarity, there is no object of apprehension of blue, etc. However, the action of apprehending blue, etc., is only the nature of clarity. That which is also said not to be transformed into self-nature is called "therefore." Just as seeing the external moon, seeing the moon as two, and seeing it as different, similarly, in the nature of consciousness itself, there are two aspects: the aspect of the object and the aspect of awareness, which are the nature of consciousness.

One sees the very nature of oneness, and the nature of the object and the nature of realization also appear to be different. To refute some who explain that, the former position is stated, which is called "if." The so-called "that" refers to the nature of consciousness. How does one see it as different? That very nature does not change into something else. Explaining this is called "how." The so-called "that itself" means by consciousness. The so-called "in the nature of another" means in a different nature. The so-called "that" is because one fails to realize the nature. The other party argues that it is reasonable to see differences even in one object. To refute that for the time being, it is called "that is not." The so-called "in this way" means that if one's own self, with whatever nature it has, cannot realize another, then how can another's view realize another? Therefore, the so-called "seeing differences even in one object" refers to the previous single moon. The rest is an admission. If one asks what the meaning of this Commentary on Valid Cognition is, the answer is: therefore, this is the meaning. If one does not realize differences, then what does one realize? The answer is: if. The so-called "following" means that one will see one moon before. The so-called "second moon" means that one only sees it as such, which is the opposite. Therefore, the so-called "these two are different" is realization. In that case, from welcoming the doubt to establishing the conclusion, it is called "that is just so." The so-called "cause of difference"

If it is argued that yellow is not, then the answer is the inseparable blue. If that is the case, then how to prove that seeing blue and yellow are different claims? "Different claims are" is said. If it is thought that this is seeing things through other knowledge, then the answer to this is, saying "that" is that thing. If it is thought that only the appearance of blue is the thing there, then it is said "that". The appearance of blue is also. "Other" refers to wanting to be with the pillar. Because the external things that are the cause are incomplete, there is no pillar, and knowledge with the appearance of a pillar does not arise. If even so, "is" refers to seeing knowledge that is separated from difference and is the same as itself, then how to prove things? "External" is said. "Becoming like that" refers to things that can be inferred. "Other" refers to being different from immediately after that. If it is thought how to understand something that has never been seen before? "Without other basis" is said. "Not other" refers to completely understanding all things that have never been seen before. "Through it" refers to the knowledge that appears as a sphere is not the seeing that produces knowledge, because the appearance of the sphere is the appearance of knowledge, then how to see the external? If other people see the trees that produce the appearance of the sphere, then this has already been analyzed. Even so, how to see? Because that is also just recognizing one's own appearance. If it can be understood just through that, even so, in order to explain other faults, placing the other person nearby, that is, "through it" refers to, if it produces the appearance of a tree in the shape of a sphere, then can the tree be seen later? The answer to this is "if". Seeing later is also unreasonable, this is the meaning of the word "even". It will change later, but not at the time of seeing the spherical tree before. Why? Because it is the target. Furthermore, the understanding of the tree that arises later is also the appearance of knowledge.
