Here, a proponent of tenets says that what appears as its own nature is also completely excluded as something else. To this, others say, "If that is the case." If it is said that whatever appears to the earlier consciousness also appears to the later consciousness, then it would be considered an admission of permanence. To this, the proponent of tenets says, "Now it is said." This is not a negation. "By that" means by the earlier consciousness. If it is said that another consciousness will grasp permanence, then this is not a negation, because there is no trust, that is, no realization, in something permanent, because that is its object. Others think that another consciousness cannot realize it. To show this, it is said, "Therefore," because it is impossible to grasp permanence elsewhere. "By that" means by the earlier one. If it is thought, "How is it meaningless?" then it is said, "As its nature," meaning that because other graspers also realize the nature that was previously grasped. "Grasping its aspect" means manifesting one aspect. "Grasping its time" means grasping the previous time itself. "Others" means those who consider mind as a valid cognition. If it is said, "If the mind's," it means that if the mind's object is not grasped, then the mind's consciousness will not remember. If it is thought that the mind remembers what is grasped by the sense consciousness, then here it is said, "Some," meaning that an object experienced by some son is never remembered by another son. Therefore, if it is thought that because the mind's consciousness remembers, it has the quality of manifesting objects, then to this, the refutation stated by others is, "If." Even the mind with conceptual thought will not remember an object grasped by a mind without conceptual thought, because those that always have conceptual thought and those that do not are also different. If it is said that because of either of the two, what is grasped by one will be remembered by another, then it is said, "Because it is consciousness," meaning that what is grasped by sense consciousness is also

Because it becomes recollection, both are known. Therefore, it is unreasonable to fully understand the mind through the power of recollection. The term 'clinging to' refers to particularly clinging to 'this is,' because previous habitual actions operate on it. Therefore, one thinks, 'How does this arise from the eye?' To summarize and indicate this point, it is said, 'Then, regarding this.' 'Regarding this' refers to clinging. The term 'if' refers to thinking. The term 'not meaningless' refers to the tenet. Faith is particularly clinging. Stating that point refers to 'this is.' It is entirely without discrimination due to being very accustomed. Other discriminations refer to the non-discrimination of its object. The term 'abiding in' refers to existing at the present time. The term 'two kinds' refers to the continuous arising of sense consciousness, one being the nature of sense consciousness, and the other being the nature of mental consciousness. Regarding this, stating from the perspective of the tenet refers to 'this is.' For example, although someone with cataracts experiences different appearances, even so, they particularly cling to one. Similarly, here, although one experiences appearances of mutually incompatible natures, namely the two appearances dependent on sense consciousness and mental consciousness, nevertheless, due to confusion, one particularly clings to one. To clarify that happiness and so on are merely what Shantarakshita and others say, one cites 'then.' Thinking, 'Just as understanding 'this is' and so on, happiness and so on also arise because they follow habit.' To answer in the manner of other people's words, one states, 'Therefore,' that is, because it is happiness and so on. Others said, 'That is true.' To address the doubt that others may state a tenet that contradicts the scriptures, one says, 'Arising from the senses.' The opponent also thinks that happiness and so on are scriptures arising from the senses, so they say, 'Here also.' Here, although happiness and so on arise from the senses, like eye consciousness and so on, one's own
