If, without considering going along with or turning back, one merely understands fire from smoke, wouldn't that be considered inference? Because it arises from a sign with three characteristics. Just by that much, it is inference. How can knowing the light of a jewel in a distant place through a hole in a door be direct perception, since it doesn't grasp the nature of the jewel in the depths of the house? The response to the doubt that knowing pillars and so on is not knowing the nature that will arise, but is direct perception because it grasps its nature, is "However." If one grasps the nature that is to be obtained, then when will the nature of knowledge and the object of knowledge differ from other things that will arise? The previous knowledge that grasps other things that will arise is the same for both. Therefore, for both, either both are direct perception or neither is. If one asks how one obtains it without grasping its nature, the answer is that it is like both. Because of its essence or the relationship arising from it. It exists like this. "Its essence, what arises from it, its power is valid cognition," it has already been said. "To be obtained" and so on are explanations. How can there be no difference? Because there are different appearances for a jewel and its light. Therefore, just as one knows yellow eyes, merely the appearance of a jewel is like apparent direct perception. If one doubts, then the answer is that the appearance of a jewel is the jewel itself. Therefore, for the light of a jewel, it is not merely the appearance of a jewel, because there is no difference from the appearance of a true jewel. If one says that even if the appearance is not different, knowing the light of a jewel as a jewel is confusion about the object, but knowing a jewel is not like that, then the answer is that for some cases. The meaning is that even in confusion itself there is no difference. In terms of generality, generality is merely fire. The inference is the thought that there is fire somewhere here, which is confusion for both. With this, the conclusion is that the beauty on this shore and so on are not clarified, therefore it is said "Therefore." If one thinks how can it be unreasonable, the answer is that direct perception is also. If one is not confused by relying on one's own nature, then everything will not be confused.
