In order to dispel doubts about how to discriminate shapes, etc., the explanation of the part of the Commentary on Valid Cognition (Pramāṇavārttika) that does not establish the nature of things, by "this way," refers to shapes, etc. The "that" in it refers to the fact that there is no established connection with the object to be proven, such as sentient beings. Precisely because of this, here, only faults arise through conceptualization. Isn't there any other fault in this? If you ask why it wasn't mentioned, the answer is: "The remainder." Through "completely established on different things," etc., it is meant that the remaining faults have already been mentioned before, so they will not be repeated. Therefore, since the means of proof for shapes, etc., does not establish a connection with the object to be proven, shapes, etc., remain only as the sound of the means of proof, which is indicated by "only the sound of shape." The "even if the sound is not established" refers to the sound of embodied beings, etc. If the object of the means of proof is established, then the object to be proven will be established. In order to specifically show the meaning of what is generally said, what arises from the owl (Sanskrit: Ulūka) is the Ulūka school, that is, the Vaiśeṣika school. Because he is known for holding the image of an owl and is a disciple who brings happiness, he is called the Gleaner (Gzek Zan). "Impermanent" means that it can only exist for a short time. The "atoms, etc." refer to form, smell, taste, and touch, but not sound, because the Vaiśeṣika school admits that sound is a quality and admits that it is an atom. Alternatively, in the ultimate truth, sound is also an atom, so there is no fault. The example can be seen as a vase. This means of proof is also stated according to the views of other schools, so there is no fault of non-pervasion, because pervasion is admitted only through simultaneous occurrence. One should also not doubt the fault of no basis, because there is no inverted cognition for atoms. In the statement of this means of proof, the sound of "because it is an embodied being" is not established in the characteristic of the measure of a substance that is connected with the object of touch and does not pervade everything, in the objects mutually accepted by Buddhists and Vaiśeṣikas. Why is this sound not established in connection with touch for logicians?

It is said that it is not that which has become all substances. How is it established here for the Buddhist? It is said that it is for the Tathagatas. Touch is the obstacle to one's own object and the birth of others, and it possesses it. The Buddhist, therefore, desires the meaning of manifestation, and the characteristic of possessing touch is because it is established from both the Buddhist and the Particularist. The so-called "suchness" is that if it is not mistaken or the nature of being established, then the meaning to be established is accomplished. The so-called "these two" refers to sound and things, etc. If the very nature of things is mistaken, etc., then the word "etc." should be understood as unestablished and contradictory. The so-called "although wanting to be not confused" refers to what is to be established. That meaning, with the nature of things as the means of proof, relying on the examination of that, is the very object of being unconfused, which is extremely necessary. If one asks whether the examination of sound should also be done here, it is said, "Things are confused." The so-called "later" refers to the object of inference, where one does not want the word to be a measure. Likewise, one should connect it to the establishment of immeasurability in permanence. In order to show that, according to the view of others, it is not correct that Isvara alone is established as the cause of the three realms, it is said, "With permanence and space, etc." In order to eliminate this by diligence, it is said thus. How, by what nature, is the thing called Isvara the cause? Suchness is that nature itself. When the opponent acknowledges that the thing called space, etc., is not the cause, then how does he want the thing called Isvara to be the cause? It is not the cause, that is, what is the cause of space, etc., which is manifestly desired not to be the cause? It should be connected in this way. Both are also because of the same nature, so it is considered whether it becomes the nature of being the cause independently or becomes the other. Or, in the case of how it arises, how is the thing called Isvara the cause? Because it is suchness, when the thing called Isvara is not the cause, the thing called Isvara should be accepted as the nature of being the cause.
