If one doubts that because it is definitely determined, many will not appear all at once, therefore it is said "it is multiple." The exhalation and inhalation that occur like the body are also not determined to be multiple because they are related to different objects, that is its meaning. "Even without that" means even without one. "However," and so on, is to evoke the second kind of conceptual thought. Explaining the remaining part of the Commentary on Valid Cognition is: "That which causes it to arise" etc. If these are the producers, even so, because the many parts of the body work together, even if one part is missing, consciousness will not arise, if one thinks like that, then "Which part is one part?" It is said like this, meaning: it is not all. "Its" means of the body. "Working together" means, according to the situation, referring to exhalation and inhalation. Therefore, one would think that consciousness will not arise. If one thinks, however, that from different co-operators, consciousness will become different, therefore it is said "co-operators." "Exhalation and inhalation also" means it is not just the body. "In that" means referring to the statement about the body. These multiples are also because they are related to multiple objects. If one doubts which is easy, then it is also said "one hand." "Not arising or knowing" means the arising of consciousness, that is the context. In the situation where a person has as much breath as that, less than that. This is one easy one. "Multiple will arise" means on the side of separately analyzing, it is the second easy one. If exhalation and inhalation are not established as one, then how will it become easy like the body? Therefore it is said "like the body." Because it is the same for all things that have contradictory dharmas, therefore like the body, these two are not established as one, therefore it will become that easy one. However, "becoming one" means is exhalation or inhalation also of one nature at other times? Is it of momentary nature? For the first aspect, it is said "if it is one." "Will not appear" means it will become non-sequential. That reason is multiple consciousness.

is the cause. Therefore, what is called "therefore" is where many things become unclear. Explaining the latter half is what is called "however." Why shouldn't it be refuted and examined? The answer is, "Fire." What is called "not" is refutation. The explanation of "because there is no difference" is that because there is no difference, it says "mountain," etc., which are earth, water, fire, wind, etc. For the time being, just as fire has no ashes, saying it like that is "from fire." The object is arising or being determined by valid cognition. If all the smoke that arises sequentially and possesses qualities does not arise from it, then ashes would also appear here from it. But that is not the case, because it is clearly determined that it is another fire itself. Sometimes it becomes ashes, and the special statement is "here." The cause of awakening is the proximity of the object. Moreover, it is said that attachment and so on are not the cause of the mind because it is uncertain, so it is said "awakening." What is dear to one person's heart is not so to another. Even for the same person, what is dear sometimes becomes unpleasant. And so on, it means there is no certainty. Therefore, it is thought that the object is not the cause of attachment and so on. If it is thought that awakening is not the cause of attachment and so on, then where does this come from? The answer is, it is said to be "previous formations." Because it has power, attachment and so on will appear, and without power, it will diminish. Therefore, if it is said that because of the reason that attachment and so on arise from breathing and so on, therefore, "therefore." If it is said to be the cause of the mind, then it is before. Therefore, because neither before nor after is the cause, breathing and so on will not become the cause. If it is the cause, then at that time, because its nature or non-decay, other minds such as attachment arise, and even if it is one, it will clearly appear many times. Therefore, it is also not suitable as a sequential multiple cause. Therefore, from the beauty of the other shore, the previous formations themselves will become the cause.
