Therefore, it should be observed how a valid means obtains what is to be accomplished. If things are not empty, but are not suitable as things to be accomplished, then what use is this to debaters? This is its meaning. What is said here is the view of the Brahmin Arada. That is not not a valid means, but the consciousness that can establish is a valid means, this is its meaning. If, because of hesitation about what is to be accomplished, one asks how the consciousness that can establish is a valid means, therefore it is said "therefore." "Born from means" etc. are explanations. The "hesitation" in it refers to being born from means. The so-called "for whose benefit" refers to the meaning of the nature of what is to be accomplished, that is, where there is a need, where there is an effort to seek a valid means, it is called "for whose benefit." "If that is not accomplished" means that if what is to be accomplished is not accomplished, then at that time the connection with the nature of what is to be accomplished is not established, how can an uncertain thing be said to be the establisher of what is to be accomplished? Like the hairs seen by a person with blurred vision, it is not an establisher, this is its summary. "From this valid means" etc. are explanations. Or, if that valid means shows the reality of establishing things, etc., it is merely a statement, for what is to be accomplished and its establisher, because the conflicting hesitation has not been eliminated, the determination itself is lost. This is not the fault of the valid means, but it is thought that merely making a proposition is meaningful, therefore it is said "if it is not a knower" etc. Therefore, it should be shown in other ways, this is one's own view, not because of admitting hesitation, but because it is determination. The so-called "consciousness is a valid means" refers to the consciousness that can establish. If one doubts how it can be understood as a valid means because of hesitation about the nature of what is to be accomplished, therefore it is said "the nature of what is to be accomplished," meaning that it is determination, not hesitation. If one asks, since the nature of what is to be accomplished is something that will arise, how can it be determined? That is me
