Titled "A Commentary on the Ornament of Valid Cognition, Extremely Pure." Titled "A Commentary on the Ornament of Valid Cognition, Extremely Pure." In Sanskrit: Pramāṇavārttikālaṅkāraṭīkā suviśuddhanāma Pramāṇavārttikālaṅkāraṭīkā suviśuddhanāma,The Extremely Pure Commentary on the Ornament of Valid Cognition). In Tibetan: Titled "A Commentary on the Ornament of Valid Cognition, Extremely Pure." I prostrate to the one who dispels the net of views of the all-knowing! The teacher Jñānaśrī Dharmakīrti, the benefactor of others, the guru, the glorious Jñānaśrī, having greatly praised, I compose the explanation of the Ornament. If this pleases the intelligent, even if it does not accomplish the meaning, I or someone like me will become the meaning of remembrance. At that time, the teacher Jñānaśrīgupta, who composed the commentary on the scriptures, the glorious teacher Dharmakīrti, composed the treatise on Valid Cognition, but it was not completed. Because of old age and declining strength, he entrusted the burden of composition to me, so in order to express the meaning of the ultimate, I speak the first verse as a means of paying homage. The author of the Commentary, when composing the explanation of the first chapter, said that the treatise is meaningless due to the faults of the listeners. In the remaining commentary, the teacher Devendrabuddhi, who is renowned for his great intelligence, also saw that it was not just once, but extremely mistaken, in relation to his own intention. Even when looking at the speaker, he became weary, and those without small intellectual abilities also composed verses such as "Thus." In order to dispel that weariness, Jñānaśrīgupta, having determined his own nature to be wise, because I and others do not dwell nearby, he saw that the teacher was weary in his dwelling place, and also saw that the commentators and others still did not understand, so in the intelligence of the commentators, although there is no intelligent person to accept it, it is not that there is none, and so on will be explained. Because of the fear of having no one to accept it, when he composed it, he intended to adorn the treatise, as explained in the three chapters, and the first words spoken by the teacher should also be spoken. Thus, composing treatises for the sake of others is certainly necessary because it is needed for others to enter.

It is definitely necessary to state the content to be expressed. The teacher has also explained it in other treatises, but it has not been seen explained here. When writing a commentary, in order to understand what should be emphasized in the initial expression, the content to be expressed in the first chapter itself is explained, not the content of the entire treatise. Therefore, the content to be expressed in the treatise is the establishment of validity, and this treatise is to accomplish this, which is inferred from the expression of the author. Therefore, this treatise shows that the content to be expressed in that treatise is validity, because for those who seek a clear understanding of its nature, there will be no obstacles to entering into it. If the entry of all those with understanding is necessarily based on seeking necessity, then shouldn't the intention be expressed for the sake of others' entry? As it is said: All treatises, or some actions, if the necessity is not stated, who will accept it? Just as it is said. In this regard, even if words are not related to external things, words will become proof of entry for those who have doubts about the meaning, so what is the need to determine this? It is necessary to state the necessity first, because by stating the necessity, just as by stating the connection, it can promote the understanding of the content to be expressed, so the necessity should be stated. Just like this, if it is necessary to state the necessity of the expression, then, since explaining the content to be expressed itself is the result of the treatise, if the content to be expressed is not understood, it will not be understood, so it can only promote the understanding of the content to be expressed. If it is necessary to state the necessity of the content to be expressed, then, if the content to be expressed is not understood, how can it be known what its necessity is? Therefore, it can only promote the understanding of the content to be expressed. Therefore, since entry is not necessary, and understanding can be achieved elsewhere, the initial speech is not for explaining the content to be expressed, but for explaining the necessity itself, because entry needs it, and it is uncertain. Therefore, if it is said that it is necessary to state the content to be expressed first, then how should it be stated? Here, through which expression can the statement of necessity be determined? Through words, or through meaning, or through both? In this regard, the necessity of words itself is to understand the content to be expressed, so what is the use of explaining it? It has already been understood.
