Because direct perception is also more reasonable than inference. Mutual dependence, neither direct perception nor inference exists. Inference relies on direct perception that holds things and connections. Does direct perception hold connections only by itself, and not rely on inference? So, if anything cannot exist on anything, how can they depend on each other? Therefore, "own nature" and so on are mentioned. Cutting off what is both one's own nature and the aspect of one's object, that is, making it manifest. To show the inability, it is said "therefore," that is, through direct perception. Why not distinguish holding? "Place and time are different" is mentioned, because the relationship becomes like that, so it is thought that the reality of things is not held by direct perception. If direct perception universally holds the relationship of place and time, what fault would there be? "If place and time are different" is mentioned, in that case, all the worlds would become seeing all things. If one temporarily sees a common nature in some place, is that said to be holding a relationship? "Not pervasive, common" and so on are mentioned. The proponent said: Because the common nature is occasional. If seeing the common nature gives rise to inference, it will also become too extreme, to which it is explained: Or universally, because there is also an occasional common nature in pots and cloths, therefore seeing one of them will infer the others, that is the meaning. Therefore, the difference relationship of place and so on is not known by direct perception. So, what does direct perception know? "That itself" and so on are mentioned. "That" refers to from the perspective of direct perception. If it does not hold different places and times itself, then, what contradiction is there in holding what is pervaded by existence? "Place and so on" is mentioned, that is, other places and so on. "That pervades" refers to the pervasion of existing there. "That" refers to not being grasped by the consciousness that holds the pervasion, so it is not understood. Therefore, direct perception itself is related to things and connections.

It is not directly apprehended, but rather depends on subsequent inference. Therefore, for the sake of mutual dependence, none of them are established. If direct perception does not apprehend pervasion, but other inferences apprehend it, how could it become the fault of mutual dependence? It is said, "other inferences," and so on. Why? Because the understanding of the stated pervasion depends on this and that. Therefore, the relationship is established from other inferences, but since it comes from direct perception, the fault of mutual dependence is there. Having refuted the views of others in this way, the debater himself summarizes his own school, which is the word "therefore," meaning that it is established by understanding the meaning. By defining a valid cognition (pramāṇa) as non-deceptive, we must undoubtedly also accept our definition, saying the word "valid cognition." If something is a valid cognition because it is non-deceptive, then if there is no harm, it is certainly only a valid cognition. But when there is harm, how can it be a valid cognition even if it comes from non-deception? So it was thought. It is said, "from harm," that which is considered a valid cognition because it comes from non-deception will become non-valid cognition from harm. Therefore, it is thought that only the absence of harm is a valid cognition. What is called "statement" here is refuting valid cognition. Thinking that by pointing out faults to others, one has not established any answer for one's own school. To be established by understanding the meaning is also a sin, even if admitting valid cognition would be so, but to slander valid cognition is merely wavering, so it was thought. Therefore, from "merely without harm" to "will be known," in order to understand further, one recalls the previous refutation. Initially, the absence of harm is also present in error, but later it is uncertain, it has already been said. The word "obtained" is the answer of others, that is, obtaining the real meaning. The refuter said, one should understand that obtaining is the definition of valid cognition, it is abiding in the real meaning. "What will happen from that?", that
