Is it not the case that things in the world exist through cognition? Since the Teacher (Shakyamuni) has explained the four kinds of harm, have you not also acknowledged it? Thinking this, the question "Then how is it?" is asked. The proponent thinks, "This is a true conventional truth," and answers, "It is not so in any way." Refer to "The Reality of the Present Moment." In this way, to show that "it is so" and "the present establishment," he says, "Because of that," and so on. This shows that, with respect to the ultimate truth, harmlessness is not its characteristic. If that is the case, then it changes depending on convention. In convention, it is not that there are no things to be harmed and things that harm, because that would lead to the absurdity that explaining the four kinds of harm is unreasonable. Since the characteristic of non-deception is also merely conventional, what is the difference between them? Harmlessness can be used for consciousness in dreams, but non-deception itself cannot, because even there, the function is experienced. If it is said that if both are conventional, then even if everyone seeks things that have a function, when measuring प्रमाण (pramāṇa, measure, प्रमाण, pramāṇa, measure), it is necessary to rely on non-deception of the function. Therefore, in the nature of convention, non-deception itself should be the characteristic of प्रमाण (pramāṇa, measure, प्रमाण, pramāṇa, measure). In this way, harmlessness does not make anything functional. However, because the thing to be harmed is not obtained due to harm, harmlessness itself is non-deceptive to it, if it is said so, then for the term of प्रमाण (pramāṇa, measure, प्रमाण, pramāṇa, measure) that tends towards the function, the reason is only non-deception of it, and harmlessness abandoned by the thing is not its characteristic. To conclude the characteristic of non-deception through doubt, he says, "Therefore." This shows that whatever does not deceive the function of things, that is प्रमाण (pramāṇa, measure, प्रमाण, pramāṇa, measure). Whatever arises harmlessness from becomes प्रमाण (pramāṇa, measure, प्रमाण, pramāṇa, measure), wherever the object is harmed, that is not प्रमाण (pramāṇa, measure, प्रमाण, pramāṇa, measure), it is not so. To clarify this, the summary is "If." "Self" means through one's own nature, as it appears to be functional. "Through others" means that it appears to be established, through the nature of other consciousness that appears to be functional. If temporarily

Isn't the distinction between dreams and the waking state truly existent? Because without harm, it wouldn't arise there, for in dreams too, one sees the appearance of things being effective. Therefore, is the distinction between dreams and the waking state, as well as valid cognition and other aspects, also caused by harm? If so, then it is said that there is no difference between dreams and non-dreams. 'Dreams and' is an explanation. Then, does the distinction between valid cognition and non-valid cognition become truly existent? It is said, 'Likewise.' How do these two become mere terms? It is said, 'It will be explained.' From the perspective of terms, it is within this very thing called valid cognition. As it is said, even in dreams there is an appearance of things being effective, but merely the appearance of being effective is not valid cognition, because such a definition would be too broad. However, the nature of not being deceptive, which is the existence of effectiveness without change, is valid cognition. This is what is said, keeping this in mind. If neither has a lasting effect, isn't that so? But change sometimes occurs even in the waking state, so how do you distinguish between the unwavering and the other state? Indeed, if examined closely, there is no difference between dreams and the waking state, as has already been said. For example, in the waking state, there is external clinging, and even though the sun has passed and is interrupted by night and so on, there is still the experience of the appearance of effectiveness, and when there is memory, one clings to it as real, and one thinks that the benefits derived from it gradually diminish, leaving only a slight trace. But it is not so in dreams, because its clinging is the ultimate of the state of sleep. Therefore, what is called stable and unstable effectiveness refers to stable and unstable clinging. To show this, it is 'of dreams.' What is called effectiveness refers to the appearance of effectiveness. What is called habit refers to latent impressions. To be certain that this appearance of effectiveness arises from the power of habit and is not caused by truth, satisfaction does not exist. Because waking reverses it, complete satisfaction exists, it is said.
