If a certain knowledge cognizes others, then as long as it does not know its own nature, it is not the subject that cognizes others (such as happiness, etc.). Then, how can it understand its own nature, that is, the essence of self? If it is said that because happiness, etc., are knowable, they can know themselves, that is not correct, because self-knowledge has not yet been established. If it is said like this: because these are knowledge, the happiness, etc., that cognize others are also knowledge, just like a vase, etc. If that is the case, then happiness, etc., will appear as external forms, just like a vase, etc. Because there is knowledge that depends on the same object, happiness, etc., are knowable. They are not manifested as external, and vases, etc., are not cognized through knowledge that gathers on the same object. Therefore, some Vaibhashikas say that they are distinctly different manifestations, to which the answer is: The nature of that and non-that thing, Born from that and non-that thing, The cause of consciousness and non-consciousness is not different, Why can't happiness, etc., be known? It means that the nature of that thing refers to the rice sprout. They are produced by the nature of that and non-that. The cause of the rice sprout, such as the seed, etc., produces the rice sprout, and the cause of the barley sprout, such as the seed, etc., produces the barley sprout. Because in any case, the cause that makes the fruit different is different. Therefore, if happiness, etc., are born from the cause that is not different from consciousness, such as the eye, etc., why can't it be cognized? The intention here is: happiness, etc., are not attachments that are different from consciousness, therefore direct perception cannot be established as a different entity. If it is said that one can understand that happiness, etc., are different from consciousness through inference, then if one can show here that happiness, etc., are a sign of different causes, one can understand it through inference, because different fruits are not necessarily different causes. If it is said that one can understand that the cause of happiness, etc., is different through different fruits, then merely different fruits cannot prove that the cause is different, because we see different fruits arising from the same cause.

like smoke. In order to prove that happiness and knowledge are different, since different results are not seen, different causes themselves are the factors that prove different happinesses, etc., but there are no different causes, therefore, it should be known that happiness, etc., are not different from consciousness, because they have undifferentiated causes and undifferentiated self-nature. Commentary on the Pramāṇavārttika, Volume Twelve. In order to explain that it has the same cause, the verse says: The self-object and the senses, and how the mind, with its own power, appears to generate happiness, etc., the mind is also the same as this. It means that one's own object is the object that attracts one's own mind, the senses such as the eye are the same as things such as sorrow, and how the mind with its own power to generate each appears to generate happiness, etc., and the mind generated by the eye, etc., is also the same. Therefore, it is not different because of different causes. However, happiness, etc., arise from the power of Dharma and non-Dharma. If consciousness is generated by causes such as the eye, how can it not be a different cause? The verse says: When they are present and absent, in some they arise and do not arise, happiness, etc., or the mind appears, it does not arise from it. It means that if the eye, etc., exist, happiness, etc., will not appear to arise, and if the eye, etc., do not exist, happiness, etc., will not appear to arise. Moreover, it is not the consciousness of the eye, because if the eye, etc., exist, happiness, etc., or consciousness will arise, this is the concluding statement. Therefore, those happinesses, etc., do not arise from a cause other than the cause of consciousness. Because Dharma, etc., do not have the ability to generate happiness, because the actions of Dharma, etc., do not arise from obtaining the achievement of wanting and not wanting itself. If the cause of happiness, etc., is Dharma, etc., itself, then even without giving garlands and incense, happiness, etc., will arise. However, even if there is the achievement of happiness such as offering incense, if it is confused by sorrow, the mind will not generate happiness, therefore, Dharma itself is the cause of happiness, not external, if you say so, then non-Dharma itself is sorrow
