Commentary on the Compendium on Valid Cognition, Chapter Three: The Hidden Sun. Commentary on the Compendium on Valid Cognition, Chapter Three. The Hidden Sun. Commentary on the Compendium on Valid Cognition, Chapter Three, Volume One. Now that the common characteristics of valid cognition have been explained, now, in order to show its divisions. "Direct perception and inference, two valid cognitions are the very nature." Thus it is said, because it is infallible, it is valid cognition. Infallibility itself also arises from the object, therefore, it is not mistaken about the object. If it is not deceiving about the object itself, how is it to be known? Are direct perception and inference, the two valid cognitions, derived from sound, etc.? Valid cognition is only direct perception and inference, this will prevent the views of the worldly Lokayatas. Therefore, it is certain that inference proves the other world and omniscience, so for that purpose, first the divisions of valid cognition are stated. If it is certain that there are no other valid cognitions, then it is appropriate to definitely grasp that there are only two valid cognitions, otherwise it is not. Is the refutation of other valid cognitions also by direct perception and inference, or is it from other valid cognitions? If the first position is taken, then if it is certain that other valid cognitions are refuted, then two valid cognitions are established, and if two valid cognitions are established, then because it is certain that there are no other valid cognitions, there will be the fault of mutual dependence. Or, if it is the second position, then it will not become two valid cognitions, because there is another valid cognition that proves that there are no other valid cognitions, isn't it? In order to eliminate that, the author composed the *Pramāṇavārttika*: "Because there are two objects to be measured, there are two valid cognitions, because of the ability and inability to perform a function, hair combs, etc. are not objects, because there is no desire for an object." Thus it is said, through the distinction between direct perception and inference, it should be understood that valid cognition is only of two kinds, because it is a cognition with the nature of general and specific characteristics. Because there is no other way of cognition other than that. Therefore, the very understanding of the manner of general and specific characteristics is known by wisdom, because there is no other valid cognition, this is the proof that refutes it, therefore it is not endowed with other valid cognitions. Or, because the nature of the object to be measured is one,

If it is like this, there are two kinds of objects, because it will be explained that the self-character is the only object to be measured. If you say so, here it is said that even if the object is unique, it is two kinds because there are two kinds of knowledge. Because the experiences are different, they become different, so the valid cognitions also become different. However, how does the object become different due to the difference in experience? Isn't it because the other is different, so the other is different? The difference of a horse does not lead to the difference of a white cow, because there is no connection. Even if it is the object of experience, is it because there is no connection? If you say so, that is not reasonable. Like this, the name of existence of all things depends on experience. Through different understandings, it should also be known that the objects are different. When the function of a thing is the characteristic of manifestation, the thing is understood through its own ability, then, because it is to be understood through its own nature, it is the self-character. When a thing is understood in an indirect way, because it has no ability, then, because it is expressed through the common nature, it is the common character. However, if it is like seeing two moons, etc., because it is understood without ability, will it become a common character? No. Like hair, etc., seen by a dazzling person, and things distinguished from hair, are not understood through direct or indirect means, but through ability, because there is no interest in things. Even without things, it is determined by a harmful valid cognition. From this, it can be known that there are two kinds of objects to be measured: because of similarity and dissimilarity; because of the object of sound and non-object; when there are other reasons; because of the presence and absence of wisdom. Just like this, whatever is understood by the similar nature is the common character; whatever is understood by the dissimilar nature is the self-character. Then, aren't cows, etc., commonly understood in front of you, common characters? Similarly, will the idea of knowing through metaphor that this is not a cow also become a common character? That is not true. Only what is understood through the similar nature is the common character, while for non-cows, etc., it is understanding the difference. However, appearing through the similar nature
