Therefore, it is not produced. Having the aspect of experience, it will not become an image different from what is seen. Therefore, if it is said that because there is no object, there is no direct perception of mind, then, in response to this, it is said: The scriptures do not say that mind is different from direct perception, nor do they say that they are not the same. For example, form is known by two kinds of consciousness, because it is said "know." There, it is not shown that mind is inverted, because it is shown as direct perception and inference. Or, because it is shown in seeing and remembering. Sometimes, sense consciousness knows form, and sometimes, memory arising from experience knows form, because there is no difference in understanding form except for direct perception and non-direct perception wisdom. Therefore, the sutras do not consider mind to be contrary to direct perception. Mind is direct perception. Even so, if it is said that there is an opportunity to be refuted by others, then, in response, it is said: Therefore, the consciousness of the senses, arising from that immediate condition, the mind is the one that holds other objects, therefore the blind cannot see. The meaning is that the consciousness of the senses itself is the immediate condition, the proximate cause, and the mind that arises from that is other, different from the object of the sense consciousness, and holds the second moment of its own object. Because the mind is produced from the sense consciousness, the blind and others cannot understand through seeing. If the mind holds an object different from the sense consciousness, then will the immediate mind that sees the form completely cut off sounds and so on? The answer is: Self-meaning follows meaning-related, root-born wisdom is the cause. Therefore, even if it holds others, it also wants to hold firmly. The meaning is that one's own meaning is the first moment of the object of the sense consciousness, having the cause that follows it, for that meaning, the wisdom born of the related root is the cause of the mind. Therefore, because it is produced by the sense consciousness related to the meaning that follows its own meaning, the mind is the object of the root.

That which holds something other than the action, there must also be a holder, that is its very essence. Holding the second moment following the previous moment is the ear-consciousness of the mind. Holding other objects is not so, that is its definition. This is debated: If the mind of the senses itself, is simultaneous with it and has no function, how can it occur simultaneously in the time of self-knowing? If the consciousness of the senses is not simultaneous with the object of the mind, how can the thing held by the consciousness of the mind be a companion of the mind of the senses? The arising of consciousness is one function, but the thing that is not simultaneous with the mind of the senses is not simultaneous. How can things that are not simultaneous occur at the same time? Because it is its own knowing, and where does the time of consciousness exist? The object of the ear-consciousness of the mind is simultaneous with its own knowing. If it did not exist when it was previously seen, how can it be the cause of knowing occurring simultaneously? This is answered: If it did not exist before, it has no power, and afterwards there is no need. Therefore, all causes exist before the effect arises, so the thing of the consciousness of the mind, and the mind that holds the object itself are not simultaneous. If time and things are different, how can they be held? The cause itself, is able to give form to knowing, and awareness is considered to be held by knowing. However, different from the consciousness of the mind

If it is said, how can the object that acts together with the consciousness of the temporal sense faculty be grasped by the mind? In response to this, it is said: The wise, who understand reasoning, consider it to be the cause, that is, the consciousness is able to project its own image. Just as dry things grasp an iron lump, it is not the object of grasping and being grasped. Then, when recognizing the image of one's own nature, is not the appearance itself grasped? Is it not generating its image? The appearance to one's own consciousness is simultaneous, therefore how can it become the grasped cause? Then, what is this so-called appearance? Is it the nature of the object? Or is it the nature of consciousness? If the appearance is the nature of the object, then is it like the nature of blue, etc.? Or the appearance will not separate either, because it is the nature of the object, so it will always appear. If it is said that consciousness continuously ceases, so appearance also ceases, is it not that consciousness produced the appearance? That is originally there, because it is the nature of the object. What can consciousness do to it? If it is said that if there is consciousness, it can be seen, otherwise it cannot, then is the producer of appearance consciousness? If that is so, that is not right, because appearance and consciousness are simultaneous. If appearance is consciousness, then the nature of the object is not appearance, but consciousness itself appears as the image of the object. If eye consciousness is the common action of various causes such as the eye, how can it definitely grasp the only object? Answer: Although there are many causes, whatever produces a result that is consistent with it, that is what gives another characteristic, that is called grasping. Because, even though the causes that produce the result, such as the eye, are many, but whichever cause produces a result that is similar to it, that result is determined by that cause, because the nature of that cause is projected onto whichever result, that result can also grasp the image of that cause, this is called grasping. For example, just like calling a son grasping the image of the father. Therefore, the sense faculty's
