Since inference also requires another subject of dharma (chos can), dharma and subject of dharma will become limitless. Therefore, the subject of dharma should be known through direct perception. If it is held to be the basis of many dharmas, then how can there be no direct realization? To this, the author of the treatise replies: 'That which has many characteristics as a subject of dharma, is not by the senses in every way. Self-awareness is an object that cannot be pointed out, it is the object of the knowledge of things.' That is to say, the subject of dharma, such as a vase, which has various characteristics, is not realized in every way by the senses. However, it is reasonable that the agent is its own nature, because that characteristic itself is the object of direct perception. Subjects of dharma such as form and taste are not apparent to the consciousness of the senses, because forms and so on appear to be mutually distinct. The aggregation of distinct things is also non-existent, because the meaning of abiding in it, forms and so on, are objects of direct perception. However, because the recognition arises that 'what I saw as a vase and so on is what I touched,' if forms and so on become of one essence, then it is not so, because recognition is not direct perception. So, if self-awareness is an essence that cannot be pointed out, and is the object of sense consciousness, then how can dharma and subject of dharma become different? It is said: 'The subject of dharma that is separate from all, from what and what it is separate, from that separation, is the distinction of distinguishing. That is the very nature of multiplicity.' That is to say, if one sees a lump of cow that is separate from all similar and dissimilar things, then the separation from what is not the substance of a cow and what is not white, from that separation, the distinction established by that distinction is the multiplicity that exists therein. Therefore, this will show that the subject of dharma, with its nature of being made, etc., is considered to be the distinction of being made, which is the separation of many characteristics. For example, when seeing a gold bracelet, the kind and shape do not appear to be different, but because it has the nature of shape and color, it is the object that appears as gold. The difference of the subject of dharma is established by distinction.

What kind is it? However, because of recognizing that dharma and dharmas are different, what is established is taken by direct perception. If it is said that there is no direct perception of conceptualization, then, here it is said, that is examined by different entities, the mind without conceptualization, not a variety of occasional occurrences, is the object of various appearances. That is to say, the difference between dharma and dharmas is established by examining different entities, because the occasional occurrence of the mind without conceptualization is not a variety of appearances, so the various appearances of the knowledge of conceptualization are not the object of what is seen, because direct perception is the aspect of manifestation, but not holding what is established by conceptualization. Because of the connection with meaning, the occasional occurrence of direct perception itself, the occasional occurrence of different natures examined is not what is seen. Direct perception is the aspect of things, because it is the reason why the dharmas of various aspects are different. Therefore, conceptualization and what is seen are different because of different causes and different aspects, and difference is ultimate. So, are there also different dharmas such as white that are without conceptualization? Is it the object of direct perception? The answer is, if it is also white, etc., how is it the object of the senses? Because of the different nature of knowledge, that is not what the sound says. That is to say, if white, etc., is the object of the senses, even so, what kind of white appearance is the white, etc., that is the object of the senses, that is not what the sound says, like this, the senses do not understand white in the form of dharmas, nor do they understand it differently from the shape. Sound holds what is seen from the nature of the dharma that appears different from the shape and unclear. Therefore, it is said that the nature of direct perception and the knowledge arising from sound, the difference between clarity and unclearness is different, and the wisdom arising from sound does not enter the realm of the senses. If it is one meaning, wisdom is based on various things, now the ears, etc., the mind, from those of different meanings.
