That which is closely established by sound is the mind itself, which has the birth of being taken by the remembrance of the sign, and has the discrimination of before and after. Therefore, it is established that direct perception is free from discrimination. Then, why is it said that birth depends on the sense faculty, not on the object, since it depends on both? The meaning of this treatise by the teacher is this: If direct perception arises from dependence on the eye and dependence on the object, why should it be said to depend on the sense faculty, and not on the object? This is a word of reproach. From the point of view of objects such as form, it can also be said, but not only from the sense faculty. It is not only from the birth of the sense faculty that it is direct perception. Because what is born from an eye obscured by cataracts, seeing two moons, is not direct perception. Entering into the appearance of the object, all are only direct perception, therefore, that which is not deluded about the object is direct perception, and it is reasonable to say that it is also without delusion. Then, if the appearance of two moons enhanced by the object is not delusion itself, is it? Therefore, even if it is produced by the power of the object, it is not all non-inverted. Or rather, the moon is not the object of the consciousness that appears as two moons, because consciousness cannot establish remembrance. If that is not the object, then, if that is the case, then, is not the cause of appearing as inverted the sense faculty itself? Because it is the cause of having been obscured by cataracts. The sense faculty that is closely obscured is a seeming sense faculty. Therefore, if the eye and the object are the same, then it is reasonable to argue, if the object is also direct perception like the sense faculty, and is able to produce consciousness, then, why is the birth that depends on the two not spoken of by it? If it is said that if the object has the obvious ability to produce direct perception consciousness, like the sense faculty, then, if that is the case, why is the direct perception that arises from dependence on the sense faculty and the object not said to be dependent on the object from the point of view of that object? Here it is said that one should examine the knower himself, and then determine the use of terminology. Now it also exists in the name of the sense faculty, and its dharma also certainly exists.
