The reason why they are not allowed to depend on names one after the other is for this reason. Just by obtaining the help of mindfulness, the eye does not attach to a non-object, even if mindfulness and the sun have risen, a person whose eyes have deteriorated will not give rise to grasping at form. If form becomes clear, even without the help of mindfulness, the eye will attach, even without mindfulness, it will give rise to a clear nature. If it is said that the image of sound established by seeing will generate mindfulness, that is not the case. If the image of sound is the object of a clear nature, then it will change from the beginning, because it is no different from what is seen. If it is said that what is known by name will appear from beyond the clear image, if that is the case, then the consciousness that grasps another image from beyond the clear image will become another consciousness, because the consciousness of names etc. has no function of seeing. If the cause of root consciousness is other, then mindfulness becomes meaningless there. If it is said that the object of clear image is the cause of root consciousness other than the image of mindfulness, therefore it itself becomes the object, if that is the case, then for the clear image, mindfulness becomes meaningless, because the mindfulness that grasps the clear one has no function, even without mindfulness, one can understand the clear image. If a symbol is used to accomplish, the symbol is what one wants to remember, if one grasps a symbol without difference, then what is the meaning of mindfulness? If the root with the help of mindfulness attaches to form etc., if there is no mindfulness of names etc., form will not appear, because there is no establishment like "what is this", if it does not change, even without the establishment of thinking "this is this", one can see form. Because the consciousness arising from the establishment of sound has no excellence, what is the need for establishment? If it is said that if there is establishment, then it will definitely depend on form etc., because it will depend on achieving happiness and suffering by "that and this", that is not the case, even without establishment, it will depend.

It is seen that even from non-conceptualization, one enters by the power of previous habituation. For example, the conceptualization of a horse enters even from merely seeing a cow. Therefore, there is no definite action for what will be entered. If it is said that one enters what is seen through habituation, then in that case, even without remembering names and so on, one would not fail to enter at the beginning. Therefore, if it is said that there is remembrance when entering for the sake of entering at the beginning, the reply to this is: For the distinct object with a clear appearance, which is without imputed distinctions, that distinct object which is to be grasped by not being combined with sound, why would one remember anything else? That is meaningless. Just as imputation is desired to be remembered as a sign for the purpose of accomplishing terminology, because the distinction is not distinguished by sound. For understanding the nature of clarity itself, remembering names and so on is not necessary. Because the initial entry is transformed from inference. The proximity of sound is not an action for seeing form, nor is it for entering. Even if habituation to the meaning of sound is meaningless, conceptualization will enter. If it is said that what appears to sense consciousness is a generality, and not the distinctness previously seen, then if only the generality is apprehended, one should not rely on the particular. Therefore, it is said in [the verse about] eye and form, etc.: 'Relying on the eye and forms, etc., the eye consciousness will arise.' If one only apprehends the generality that is separated from the particular in direct perception, then the desire to appear as a particular will not be attained, but in reality, one desires the particular. For example, if one only apprehends the generality of 'tree,' one still wants to know 'what kind of tree it is, such as birch, etc.' Without understanding the prior and subsequent remembrance, there is no apprehension of the generality, and the remembrance of the sound that is spoken has no effect on what is seen. Therefore, relying on the eye and form, the eye consciousness will arise. For example, if it is seen that the eye only enters the form that exists externally, how would it become an object of sound and generality? Therefore, before and after remembrance, the eye consciousness does not apprehend the prior and subsequent, because non-conceptualization only manifests what is proximate.
