Because it appears in everything. Commentary on the Pramāṇavārttika, Chapter 9. If it is said that an object separated from objects, etc., is never realization, here it is said: Others who have minds elsewhere, also, will see forms with their eyes. At that time when they do not grasp the sign, the realization produced by that clarity is. This means that for a person whose mind is focused on another object, the form of the cow will appear in front of them because of their eyes. Know that the form of the cow is clear, that is, it has appeared, but they do not grasp the sign of the cow, because their mind is focused on the object of the horse. That which arises from the sign is considered to be conceptual thought. If all knowledge arises together with speech, then how can one see a cow when one is thinking of a horse? Because two conceptual thoughts do not arise simultaneously. When one is thinking of a horse, one does not notice the arising of the conceptual thought of a cow, and the certainty established by the sound of a cow does not exist in a place where it is easy to see a cow, nor is it something that has already been realized. Just because it is not something that has already been realized, it is impossible to think that realization exists, because if one sees a cow, it would lead to the realization of everything in the three realms. Therefore, seeing a cow is beyond naming. If someone says that at the time when one does not grasp the sign, there is some kind of general cognition, that is also unreasonable. If there is some kind of general cognition, then its particularity will not become its object, because it will not appear as a particular thing. The nature of appearance is the object of conceptual thought, as has been explained before. Therefore, since one does not grasp the sound that expresses the particularities that are determined separately, what is grasped is non-conceptual thought. If someone says that because it grasps definite objects such as objects, it is not non-conceptual knowledge.

Because it is not completely cut off, merely manifesting one's own nature is not a complete cutting off. Because time is beyond the senses, it is not a complete cutting off. It is not merely from the appearance of blue that different times appear. Therefore, it is said that the nature of blue and so on is manifest and devoid of cutting off, while the objects to be cut off and the agent of cutting off are indicated by conceptual thought. Therefore, even if there are other conceptual thoughts, it can be established that direct perception is free from conceptual thought from seeing a cow. If it is said that the sense organ that has the memory of the expressive sound as an assistant manifests the nature of pus, then if there is a conceptual thought of a horse, then a cow will not be seen, because without the assistant cause, the cause will not enter its own result. For example, if a seed is separated from the earth, it will not produce a sprout. However, the assistant of all knowledge is not the memory of names. If it is said that it is not the apprehension of the meaning with the distinction of names, that is not right. For if it is different from the sense organ that has memory as an assistant, it is that which appears as a name, and it is another clear appearance. At that time, it becomes a direct perception that is different from conceptual thought, and it prevents the nature of direct perception from being conceptual thought. If it is said that the knowledge that holds the clear nature and has understanding is the same, and that seeing and conceptual thought are not different, then if that is the case, then seeing a lotus will give rise to the conceptual thought that "the lotus is fragrant." Then why not admit that the eye, which has the memory of the lotus being fragrant as an assistant, can clearly hold the image of the lotus? Because the eye has the memory of smell as an assistant, and there is no fault in entering the smell of the lotus. If it is said that even if there is memory, the eye does not enter the smell because it is not an object, then even if there is memory, the eye does not enter the sound because it is not an object. Therefore, the knowledge of the eye is that which apprehends meaning apart from sound and so on. Furthermore, for what is sound definitely established?
