of the kind. When the eyes are opened and external appearances arise, and one identifies "this is a cow," how can speech not become the object of things? To this, it is said here: For the things that appear to the eye, the speech that says "what is this?" is connected by sound, not the scope of the senses. That is to say, if blue and so on appear clearly when the eyes are opened, and sound appears from the knowledge produced by sound, even so, merely by the appearance of its own nature, there is no connection between sound and things. Saying "this is the speaker of this" is the sixth distinction, and it needs to be explained that the thing being indicated itself is connected with sounds, but the thing indicated by the sixth distinction is not an obvious scope, because it merely shows things that are unrelated to the connection. It is not the case that things that are within the scope of the senses appear in connection with sound, but rather it is through the distinction itself that one knows the distinguished thing "this," and if there is no help and nothing to be established, fire will arise. Or rather, because one can understand this thing through the power of sound, it is said that it is its speaker, that is, sound. Is it not the eye itself that can understand the clear nature? At that time, it is not through the power of sound. Or rather, is the realization of understanding the clear nature at other times produced from sound? That is meaningless, because the thing that exists at other times cannot be understood by the eye at that time, and when the knowledge that arises in connection with sound does not arise clearly, a clear appearance will not occur. Therefore, sometimes "this is its speaker" remains in the mind, and from the speaker, the thing remains in the mind of the listener, because the words that one wants to express are indicated by the sixth distinction, which has the nature of cause and effect, but the thing indicated by the distinction is not an obvious scope, because it only involves the nature of being close. Therefore, the field of sound is not the scope of the senses, but it is general. If the eye sees things, then

If clear appearance is not clinging to others, then how can sound be connected with an object that has other meanings? Here, I say: Without the function of the senses, merely because of other things, it does not appear. It is also not through unexpressed connection, because it would lead to knowing oneself. If one makes an agreement on the nature of clear appearance, then when a person with inactive eyes hears a sound, knowledge will become clear, but it is not born from that. Therefore, a person with active senses does not appear clearly merely through the words of others. The meaning of the object of the senses is not agreed upon by sound. Then, if it is not an agreement on one's own nature, even so, the sound indicates it. It is not that the senses indicate meaning through the power of agreement, but just as it is so in any case, does sound also transcend agreement and indicate meaning only from its own nature? To this, I say: Unexpressed, that is, the meaning of the connection not being established, is not agreed upon by sound, because even if one is separated from agreement, when one hears a sound, it will lead to the arising of clear knowledge of one's own nature. Even if one opens one's eyes, clear awareness will not arise. Therefore, the inexpressible wisdom born from the senses is manifest perception with overwhelming conceptualization, because it holds pure objects. Then, how is it understood that the conceptualization of thinking "this is a snake" appears clearly immediately after seeing a snake? If one admits that it is based on an object different from the clear snake, that is not correct, because the difference is unclear or unexperienced. For example, just as in inference, one completely determines the aspect of fire that is different from the clear smoke and location. If one says that in clear awareness without conceptualization, there is no difference between the appearance of blue and the appearance of blue when conceptualization arises, and even if the object does not show a difference, how can conceptualization not become different in meaning? That is not reasonable, because for applying names through certainty, hesitant conceptualization will determine that meaning, but knowledge without conceptualization does not ascertain things with certainty, then how does it recognize?
