Since absence pervades the reversal of other valid cognitions, it is to be established by non-apprehension. For a valid cognition without an object is not reasonable, since there is no experience because the object to be measured, either its own nature or the nature of another, does not exist. How can it become a valid cognition? Or, the two objects are not different from consciousness, because there is no other object to be measured that is different, except for experiencing the aspects of clarity and non-clarity. Whatever external self-character is only one, therefore the meaning of 'two objects' is a synonym for 'two aspects.' If the object of direct perception is only the general characteristic in the ultimate sense, is it not the case that phenomena such as form are admitted to exist because they are related to existence? Because it makes three things exist, it is said to be existence. The Carvaka says that existence itself is the ultimate, it is the object of direct perception, and difference is illusion. Therefore, if asked how it is an object of difference, the answer is: Whatever is capable of performing a function, that is ultimately existent here, the rest is conventionally existent, those are said to be self and general characteristics. Thus it is said that whatever is capable of performing a function is the self-characteristic, therefore that itself is the ultimate, that is, it exists as a real entity by its uncreated nature. Whatever is not capable of performing a function is the other, it is said to exist conventionally and imputedly. Only those that exist ultimately and conventionally are said by the teacher to be self-characteristic and general characteristic, the ultimately existent is the self-characteristic, and the conventionally existent is the general characteristic. Existence is ultimate, whatever is said to be that phenomena exist by being related to it should be analyzed, it is not that they exist by being related to existence, because existence itself does not exist, because it is not apprehended. Furthermore, does existence relate to existence? If it is said that it exists by relating to existence, then if it is the first case, then at that time it would become inherently existent because it already existed before relating to existence. If it relies on the second case, then at that time, because of being separate from existence, things like rabbit horns would also become existent. Or, if

If rabbit horns, etc., which are non-existent by their very nature, are non-existent because they are separate from existence, then whatever performs a function exists because it exists. The characteristic of existence will become performing a function. Furthermore, if it exists by being related to existence, then generality, etc., will not become existent. However, if existence also exists by being related to another existence, then that other existence will also exist by being related to another existence, and thus there will be no end. However, if existence exists by its very nature, then why not admit that its own characteristic also exists by its very nature? However, if existence is permanent and exists by its very nature, and its own characteristic is not permanent, so it is admitted that it exists by being related to existence, its own characteristic is the result, so it exists because it arises from the cause, and the general characteristic is not the result. How can there be existence without a cause? Has it not already been shown in the first chapter that nothing exists without a cause? Therefore, only its own characteristic, which performs the function of the thing, exists, not the general characteristic. Existence itself appears to the direct perception, but the difference is not the object of direct perception. To those who say this, it is said that whatever appears to the direct perception is its object, and only its own characteristic is experienced separately, but not the existence that is the same or different from it, because it has not been experienced, how can it be the object of direct perception? Therefore, whatever unique and functional object appears to the direct perception is what truly exists, and generality exists only as an imputation by thought. Even so, if an object does not appear to be able to perform any function, how can it be the characteristic of an object that can perform a function? Thus, it is neither permanent nor impermanent, neither an object nor a consciousness, so there is no ability to function and no function. The function is also not known by direct perception or inference. Among them, first of all, the permanent cannot function, because there is no difference. The permanent is pervasive, and because it lacks the ability to produce any result, it is powerless.
