because the knowledge of it is not seen. Therefore, those who speak of two valid cognitions realize that there is nothing other than experiencing the aspects that are determined separately. This also determines that things like similarity and dissimilarity, and manifest and hidden objects, are capable or incapable of performing a function. This will be explained later. Regarding the statement that 'valid cognition of the manifest does not apply to what is hidden,' it should be stated that the manifest is that which has aspects that are determined separately, and this shows that what is other than that is hidden. Although the hidden object is not known by the manifest, the hidden object exists, but the manifest does not apply to it. If the manifest does not apply to the hidden object, then how will the dharma of the hidden itself be realized? Because the nature of the knowledge of the hidden is realized as not being hidden. If the hidden were to be experienced by the manifest, then the hidden itself would not be the nature of the hidden, because different natures cannot be the nature of dharma, just like the thing itself. However, if the dharma of it is the hidden itself because it is related to the hidden, then the hidden will be apprehended by the manifest. Therefore, the manifest that apprehends the thing related to the hidden will undoubtedly also apprehend the hidden thing, and therefore the hidden thing will also become the manifest. Therefore, the subsequent inference will not occur, because the knowledge of the manifest is not inference. Here it is said that the self-cognizing manifest knows the hidden itself, but the sensory consciousness does not apply to the object that is the subject of the hidden, because one consciousness does not know both the dharma and the subject of dharma. Knowing the two is realizing what is related, therefore, although the manifest knows the hidden itself, it must be realized by inference, so inference does occur. Furthermore, the dharma that is not different from the nature of the established thing, without apprehending the thing

It is not through understanding that one knows. Therefore, that which, together with the subject of a proposition, becomes the object of a single valid cognition, is the property of a thing. That which is hidden is itself uncertain, for direct perception does not depend on grasping the subject of a proposition. Does direct perception not engage with what is hidden? How does inference engage then? Here it is said: Inference does not establish the entity of what is hidden itself. Who would assert that direct perception engages with what is hidden? However, what is hidden is non-manifest, and it is established by the direct perception of self-awareness, which is the nature of experiencing, so it is said. Even if direct perception establishes what is hidden itself, it is necessary to establish the certainty of fire that is capable of performing a function. Regarding that, since direct perception has already engaged in performing a function, therefore, later, inference engages. Furthermore, inference cannot make its own characteristic manifest, for that is what is hidden itself, and that is when inference occurs. Therefore, it is not asserted that direct perception engages beforehand. No one seeks what is hidden itself as an object, so who would cause direct perception to engage with it? Even if it is not desired, it is its own characteristic, because it is experienced. These also state the certainty of valid cognition, for that valid cognition is established because what is hidden is ascertained. Merely being related to what is hidden is called valid cognition. The existence of what is hidden is known from a sign. Then, since there are two objects, how do they become two valid cognitions? The object is the cause, and the two valid cognitions are the result, so the result is not necessarily determined from the cause, for example, the cause is not necessarily associated with the result. Here it is said: It is not that two objects of measurement establish two valid cognitions, however, because there is the possibility of a collection, it is said that there are two valid cognitions. The possibility of a collection will also be explained below. If two objects are definitely established, then they should be shown as two valid cognitions, for example, any knowledge that establishes two objects, that itself is a valid cognition, but it is not that two objects are established from one valid cognition, so it is shown. Whenever two objects are shown for the purpose of negating another valid cognition, at that time, the object
