If you ask, how does the wisdom that focuses on sounds and so on become the basis for dispelling? The answer is: Discriminatory minds are not related to meaning, but they only cling to what is meaningless. That is because of the power of habit, the mind that clings to what is meaningless thinks of existence and non-existence. Therefore, in order to combine with the general color, realizing the impermanence of color is not another valid cognition, because there is no other object to be measured. The knowledge of remembering again and again is also not a valid cognition, because memory should not become a valid cognition. However, if you say that recognition is valid cognition because it follows the function of the senses and is not deceptive, that is not correct, because the function of the senses is close to the object. If the senses are close to the object, then how can one say "this is that" and enter? That is not correct, one does not enter merely by recognizing "this is that", but if one grasps that "it is the cause of obtaining the result", then it is appropriate to enter at that time. The function of the thing itself does not establish that, but the things that have the power to depend on their own cause, give rise to the proximate cause that can accomplish that or another function. Things are not the same function, and they are not the object of direct perception, because one remembers the things that have been experienced before as having function. The function of that is also the object of knowing "this is that", but it is not the thing of its own characteristic. If what was previously known is held by recognition, even then it is memory, combining impermanence and self-nature with having function is inference. Merely from doing that function, it is nominally non-different, and thus it is established as the same. Even if it is not deceptive, it cannot be established as the same, even if it is many, it can still accomplish the function now. Therefore, direct perception is not the object of the general, and inference is not the object of the particular. If you say that the inference that sees the difference does not understand the difference, here it is answered: Because each moment is different, it is not recognition of the difference, but because what is seen is the same, it holds that, so it is the difference.

It is not an object-possessor. That is to say, when the fire is seen to be extinguished, and later, from the smoke, it is known that it is not something else, but the same, at that time, it is recognizing the difference, but it is not a valid cognition, because it arises differently in each moment. Although there are differences, realizing it as one is to make the general characteristic the object. Therefore, because the object of teaching does not change, is the general characteristic of difference recognized in that which has no difference? It is said in response to this: Even so, it is not recognizing the object-possessor of difference, because even if the change is not seen, there is still difference. If so, how can difference be recognized? It is said that grasping the nature that arises now as the same as what was seen before is the general characteristic, because it is the object-possessor of difference. It is not inference. If that itself is an example, then there is no grasping of the general characteristic. Because it is an example, what is the use of a valid cognition in this accomplished case? That is to say, if what is realized is itself an example, then there is no grasping of the general characteristic, because the example and what is exemplified abide in difference. If so, then what is the use of a valid cognition of inference for this fire, since the example is already established by direct perception? If there is no fault because of forgetting, then it is not an example because it is the same. That is to say, although it is grasping, is there no fault because of forgetting? If so, how does it not become an example because of forgetting? Because the proof arises through the door of the example. How can its difference, which is not established, become an example? If the seen object is established by a valid cognition in another meaning, then superimposing that as the same is only a reversal. Because that is established, it is not a valid cognition. That is to say, is the object seen at another time, which is established as its object, definitely present at the time it arises now from the valid cognition of inference that sees the difference? If so, then are the natures of the former and the latter different or not different? If they are different, then superimposing that as the same on the object that arises now becomes only a reversal, because the former consciousness only grasps the former.
