Wherein, sometimes, with respect to sound and some things, such as smoke, which is understood through impermanence and fire, etc., undoubtedly arises from that fire, or the nature of being made, etc., becomes the very nature of impermanence, etc., because it possesses the relationship of being its own nature and arising from it. A sign is not what makes one understand; otherwise, it is not. This is the concluding statement. However, if arising in it or its own nature is a sign, then how can one know without being mistaken? It is said: Without its own cause or its own nature, things do not exist. Whatever things are seen, that itself is the characteristic of another. That is to say, its own nature, namely impermanence, and its own cause, namely fire, etc., cannot exist without being made to be absent; in sequence, it would follow that they are without self-nature and without cause. Whatever reason of effect or nature, if the nature of not arising without what is to be proven is necessarily seen, then that very nature should also be observed elsewhere. Moreover, since it is not present in its offspring, etc., it is not undetermined by it. What, then, is the connection of non-perception? If it is said to be the connection of its own nature and the characteristic arising from it, then non-perception would become not another reason. However, if there is no connection, then at that time it would become not a reason. It is said: Either its own nature or its own cause, those capable of appearing are to be seen, even if other causes exist, how can the non-appearing be connected with it? That is to say, its own nature, namely a tree, or its own cause, namely the reason, is capable of not appearing, that is, it becomes an object of focus; if other causes, such as the eye, etc., exist, the non-appearing, that is, the non-perceived, is connected with it, that is, connected with the cause and the pervasive; how can the effect and the pervaded exist? It will not exist. The intention here is that whatever possesses these two connections, that itself is the connection here; wherever what is to be proven pervades, the reason is made understandable by the effect and the nature; wherever the reverse connection pervades, non-perception is the reason.
