It is not possible (to produce an effect). If all minds are powerless, then from where is that desired? If it is said that minds are not seen simultaneously, then this itself should be examined. If it is said that minds are not experienced directly, but are known through other minds, then, minds also arise simultaneously, therefore, it is certain that minds will arise simultaneously. Or, if there is an interval between the object and the cognition, first the object is experienced, and then the mind is experienced, then, by what valid cognition is this certainty of not arising simultaneously known? Therefore, it is asserted to be self-awareness. Or, if it is said that because multiple minds are not seen simultaneously, the capacity must be assumed, then, the fact that minds are not seen simultaneously should be examined: Do minds arise simultaneously, or do they arise sequentially? Minds are not seen simultaneously, because even when the object is near, cognition arises sequentially. As it is also said in the scriptures: "Two minds arising is not a place, nor is there any gap." Isn't that what is said? Here it is said: Among those things that have similar natures, the capacity itself will be determined. For example, for various conceptual thoughts, it is correctly known that they arise sequentially. That is to say, the capacity of those minds will definitely give rise to cognition in things that have similar natures. For many eye-consciousnesses, etc., many natures of eye-consciousness, etc., do not arise. Why is that? For example, for various conceptual thoughts, it is correctly and certainly known that they arise sequentially. Or, conceptual thought is also something that appears clearly, and for what is called "recognition," others consider it to be direct perception. If so, it grasps things like length, etc. Then, by what does this negate direct perception? For the conceptual thought of recognition, the argument that it is considered direct perception because it appears clearly has already been refuted. Because this argument that shows that conceptual thought is not clear has already refuted those who think that recognition is direct perception because it appears clearly. Recognition is not born from the sense faculty, nor is it clear, because it is mixed with speech, how can it be direct perception? Even if recognition is clear, it is not a valid cognition, thinking like this.
