If it is said that one clings to and sees as one what is seen by others and related to other times. Then, although the consciousness of oneself and others will cling, who can prevent it? Isn't there also clinging to the previous and subsequent consciousness as one? If it is said that when a sprout appears, if the seed is not seen, then how can one cling to it? Then, for the external seed, even without seeing it, one clings to the external, and consciousness is the same. In this way, if someone can infer that someone is suitable to see firelight, then just as one clings to the external, if there is something suitable here, firelight will be seen. Therefore, appearance arises from clinging. Furthermore, just as seeing two moons, everything is just the establishment of a single name, but it is not actually so. Therefore, one should not strive for it. Smoke is not produced by fire, therefore one cannot realize the cause from the effect. Even if it is the cause, from what can it be definitely realized? If it is said like this, if the Vijnanavada people say that all appearances are related to habits. If this is the case, then smoke would not be produced by fire, because it is only related to one's own habits. Therefore, since smoke is not produced by fire, one cannot infer the cause fire from the effect. But if one thinks that smoke appears first and fire appears later, so smoke is the cause. If this is the case, then the smoke as the cause certainly cannot infer fire, if it is said like this. Then, the answer is: For it, the mind that appears as smoke, has clearly awakened habits. The mind that appears as fire itself is knowable, but it is not fire. Just like this, inferring fire through smoke is also through the mind that appears as smoke itself to recognize the mind that appears as fire. How is it? It refers to the mind that has clearly awakened habits. They will proclaim like this: The mind that appears as smoke is related to the consciousness that appears as fire, thereby recognizing that habit. The habit of fire also manifests because of awakening, thereby producing the appearance of fire, the measure of the appearance of fire.

It is not so. For example, if one infers from an external fire, there is the knowledge of fire, and for the sake of generating other fires, just as obtaining fire depends on a combination. The appearances of smoke and fire knowledge depend on a single habit. In reality, what is sought is the appearance of fire itself. Therefore, for the absence of external objects, relying on the appearance of fire, it is a valid means of inference. If it is asked how to infer future appearances, it is because one sees such inference. For external objects, they become uncertain due to dreams. It is taught that because there is no seeing itself. Now, if the appearance of smoke and so on is indeed born from habit, and that is the habituation of similar habits, then why is it that from the appearance of smoke, only the habit of smoke is understood, but not the habit of fire? Like this, the habit made by seeing any object becomes the cause of seeing the object itself, but the habit of fire is not born from the appearance of smoke. Therefore, how does the appearance of smoke, which appears later, arise? Therefore, the appearance of smoke is born from the habit of smoke, but it is not born from the habit of fire and the appearance of fire, so it cannot be understood. It is said: That is possible, habits have essence, the mind of the smoke appearance, makes the mind stream clear, therefore smoke arises from fire. For the arising of the appearance of fire, that habit of fire is essential, that is, it possesses it. The mind stream with the habit of smoke makes clear, that is, generates, the mind with the appearance of smoke that has gone before. Therefore, the habit of smoke is the proximate cause of the appearance of smoke, and the habit of fire is the assisting companion. For the future appearance of fire, the appearance of fire is the proximate cause, and the habit of smoke is the companion. Therefore, in order to establish that smoke arises from fire depending on a single combination, the establishment of the knower and the known abiding is established. Therefore, only consciousness is reasonable. Now, if it is only consciousness, then the Acharya (teacher) to the outside
