transformation. Consciousness cannot abandon its own nature, because after abandoning its own nature, it is neither self-awareness nor other-awareness. All experiences will disappear. Therefore, consciousness is the nature of experience, it is only direct perception. If the consciousness that appears clearly is direct perception merely because of the power of habituation, then the consciousness in dreams will also become direct perception. Because there are also coming, meeting, obtaining, etc. in what is seen in dreams, it is itself also not deceptive. In order to exclude these, (the text says:) "Delusion and conventional existence have memory, speech arises, inference has inferers, consciousness with cataracts, these are like direct perception." It is said like this. There are two kinds of seeming direct perception, namely, with conceptualization and without conceptualization. There are three kinds with conceptualization, in order to show that there are four kinds of seeming direct perception, (the text says:) "Three kinds of conceptual consciousness, and that which arises from the corruption of the basis, one without conceptualization, four kinds of seeming direct perception." It is said that there are three kinds of conceptual consciousness that are seeming direct perception, among which the consciousness of delusion refers to the fact that in mirages and so on, it turns with the appearance of water and so on, so it is seeming direct perception. What exists in the conventional is what has limbs and so on, because it unrealistically imputes, the conceptualization of having limbs is seeming direct perception. The consciousness of recollection and so on is because it turns with the conceptualization of previous experience. Among them, knowing that the mirage is shaking is direct perception itself, and thinking it is water, there it is seeming direct perception, because it does not realize the meaning of direct perception. For a vase, only the color and so on are direct perception, but having limbs is not direct perception. For fire and so on, imputing on the basis of previous experience, that is, the consciousness of recollection is the consciousness of grasping characteristics. Its result is the consciousness of having characteristics, because it arises following previous experience, it is seeming direct perception. Any cataract etc. of the base eye root, whatever arises from there, is the non-conceptual seeming direct perception. Like this,

These four are said to be similar to direct perception. Then, why make a distinction of cognition? If it is said to be for showing examples, that is not the case, because even stating one example of cognition is sufficient. If it is said to be for enjoying examples, now it seems too excessive, when thinking like this, it is said: To establish that it is not born from the senses, saying two is to show confusion. The words of inference, etc., are established to establish the former. That is to say, the two kinds of knowledge that exist in confusion and conventionally are said to be similar to direct perception in order to show that they are not born from the senses. Then, isn't the cognition of water in a mirage also seen as a confusion born from the senses? Like this, the knowledge born from the encounter of the senses and the object is not confused, and the nature of clinging is direct perception. In order to distinguish the cognition of water in a mirage in this definition, it is said that there is no confusion. If the cognition of water in a mirage, etc., is not born from the senses, then because the senses are mentioned, it can be excluded. Why hold on to the absence of confusion in order to exclude it? The knowledge of the part that exists conventionally, because others clearly see that it is not born from the senses, it is confused. If this is the case, then the words of inference, etc., become meaningless, even if it does not establish that it is not born from the senses, inference, etc., has already established that it is not born from the senses, when thinking like this, here it is said: The words of inference, etc., even if they establish knowledge that is not born from the senses, are also to establish that the previous knowledge of confusion and convention is not born from the senses. Inference, through the way of examples, is able to show the reversed consciousness and conventional consciousness that are not born from the senses. Then, if the knowledge of confusion and convention is not born from the senses, then from what other cause is confusion born? It is necessary to explain the cause of confusion, saying: Relying on symbols and on other things, the discriminating thoughts of superimposition, because they are close to direct perception, sometimes...
