If one does not contemplate on what is called "inverted merit," it is because, relying on existence, it is not a valid means of knowledge itself. Furthermore, if capacity has no cause, why would it not pervade everything? If there is no cause, then the determination of places and so forth is not reasonable. Is capacity not a dharma? Dharma also arises only in dependence on a possessor of dharma, so it depends on some distinction of knowledge. Even so, capacity should not be under the control of a possessor of dharma without cause, because there is no benefit. Thus, capacity does not exist apart from things; it becomes the result of which thing? If capacity is not a result, then the relationship is not established. If capacity is distinct and is the substance of a separately determined entity, then at that time, because it exists, the existence of a distinguished existence is established, and also, because following and contradicting, and entering, are the characteristics of cause and effect, the dependence on things or the dependence on certainty are both possible, so it is not a valid means of knowledge from itself. Therefore, when it is realized as a valid means of knowledge by seeing the action, how can it become a valid means of knowledge for the appearance of its own nature, such as cooking and burning, because the previous seeing has not been done beforehand? Is it not because memory arises immediately after feeling burning and so on that it is regarded as a valid means of knowledge? That is not reasonable, because memory also arises following seeing, and seeing is the very determination that the nature of the previous and subsequent objects appears, therefore memory does not see the relationship with the action. If one assumes that what is not understood by seeing is the relationship, then it will be a fallacy. Whatever memory is, it abides in its own nature, experiencing an unclear aspect, so there too, it is the very realization of one's own nature. Or, if one experiences non-deception by inference, then there too, one will experience an object that is not completely clear. Moreover, since inference does not arise without direct perception, it has been shown that grasping the relationship is direct perception itself. Therefore, since all of one's own nature appears as knowledge, it is not a valid means of knowledge, therefore it abides in the statement that one's own nature is realized by oneself. If so, then a valid means of knowledge is from a valid means of knowledge...

How to know it's wrong? Therefore, it is said that "valid cognition comes from convention." This will show that valid cognition is universally conventional. Convention is not the same as how it is examined. Because samsara is not ultimately true anywhere, it will become liberation. Therefore, samsara is established in convention, but if examined, it is emptiness. Similarly, the parts of valid and invalid cognition also exist in convention. Then, is there no valid cognition in ultimate truth? Yes, that's right. Whatever is valid cognition is conventional truth, so it is said. If the valid cognition of ultimate truth comes from direct perception or inference, then why is the word "convention" used? Therefore, it is said that "valid cognition comes from convention," and the power of inference established in convention, through definite understanding, realizes the desired meaning of manifestation, which will become proof. When habit is very pure, even without inference, understanding can arise, so direct perception is also called valid cognition. For example, wanting to realize the meaning of burning, etc., one will also think of cows, etc., and focus on burning, etc. Because burning, etc., and cows, etc., will not simultaneously generate conceptualization, non-conceptual wisdom will arise. Or, convention is considered valid cognition through the wisdom of realizing meaning. Or, because convention is applied through this, convention is inference. Therefore, it is valid cognition. Like this, know that such wisdom is non-deceptive. Doesn't inference arise from definitely grasping the connection? Grasping the connection is direct perception, because it will endlessly trace back to inference. Because that is valid cognition is also inferred through inference, will it become the fault of relying on one another? That is not reasonable. Because definitely grasping the connection is through other direct and non-direct perceptions. Here, if there is an appearance of form, etc., the need for desire, etc., will be seen. If not, it will not be focused on. Therefore, grasping the connection through existence and non-existence, so what is the use of inference here?
