It is dependent on observation. Therefore, liberation is attained by viewing emptiness of person and phenomena. The remaining meditations, such as contemplating suffering, are essentially for realizing emptiness. All the teachings of the Bhagavan are rooted in the view of selflessness. Because seeing selflessness in this way leads to liberation, the Bhagavan taught that impermanence is suffering, and from suffering, selflessness is also realized. Monks, whatever form, all is impermanent. Venerables, is that which is impermanent suffering or happiness? Venerables, that which is suffering is impermanent. That which is impermanent and suffering is subject to change, thus it should be viewed. 'This is me,' 'These are mine,' 'I exist here,' 'This is me,' regarding these, seeing selflessness in the objects of cause and effect, this is the method of liberation. This is the commentary on Pramāṇavārttika, Volume Twelve. To explain that clinging to self is the root of samsara, it is said: Not separated from attachment and possessing desire, all actions depend on it, not liberated from afflictions and karma, such is a samsaric being. If the seed of self-clinging remains, then the unchanging clinging to 'mine' is the cause of samsara. Therefore, clinging to self and mine is not separated from attachment, and will inevitably be accompanied by desire. Therefore, all actions depend on this, and one is not liberated from afflictions and karma, such is a samsaric being. Why would clinging to self lead to liberation? Because the 'mine' itself does not truly exist, from where would attachment arise? Attachment arises due to an object, but since the object does not exist in ultimate truth, how could attachment arise? This is not true, because: What is not desired as 'mine,' its eater is also not there, at that time its actions and enjoyment, the self with characteristics is also not there. That is to say, how can one be certain that the imagined 'mine' does not exist? It is due to delusion.

Because it is the cause of 'mine', if it is said that 'I' is false, then is ignorance not different from the person? Because it is said that the person is this. Therefore, 'I' is the very nature of ignorance, so it is delusion and will never be destroyed. Because delusion has become 'I', destruction is not allowed, because that itself would become non-existent. Furthermore, if 'I' exists, then actions and deeds, happiness, and other enjoyments will also disappear. If ultimately one does not want actions and enjoyments, then who will ultimately indicate 'I'? If it is determined to exist because of experiencing it as 'I', then it will exist because of completely determining the existence of 'mine'. If, because of habituating ignorance, 'mine' does not exist like dreams, then ultimately 'I' will also not exist, like dreams. If it is said to be non-dual, then at that time it is acceptable to be non-dual from experience, but it is not permanent, because it holds onto the objects that arise now, and does not hold onto the before and after that are different from experience. If there is no holding onto before and after, then it is not holding onto permanence. Memory also does not hold onto it as one, because that is not valid cognition. Inference itself, without direct perception, does not establish permanence. Therefore, whatever opponent thinks that all of 'mine' is false, the enjoyer of his happiness and so on also does not exist, because if there is nothing to be eaten, there is no eater. Therefore, if there is nothing to be enjoyed, then 'I' will certainly not exist, because will that completely pure 'I' never appear? If it appears, then it will become false, like blue and so on. Therefore, those who desire liberation, the beginningless continuum, which has seeds of the same kind, destroy the view of the aggregates from the root. The continuum, which has no beginning, is the same kind that has the seed of clinging to self, that is the view of the aggregates, wanting to destroy the mind that clings to self from the root.
