It should be examined that grasping at self is the precursor. However, it is also attached to or separated from me, for example, like my cow. Now, there is nothing that is attached to or separated from me. According to reason, others also desire to be attached to or separated from others. If it is said, won't the very nature of my being attached to or separated from become attached to or separated from? Here, I say: I am not attached to or separated from myself. Like this, just as there is a self in the world, will it become attached to or separated from it? Or, just as there is not, will it become attached to or separated from it? If we examine it like that, if it is the first aspect, then at that time, just as it exists, it is reasonable not to be separated from attachment, because it is not possible to do so. If it does not exist, then attachment will not be separated either, because it does not exist at all. In either case, the self that is attached to or separated from is not abandoned, therefore the self will not disappear. Moreover, if the self is abandoned, then meditating on suffering is meaningless. In whatever way it is not abandoned, meditating on suffering is also meaningless. Or, now, whatever is not abandoned anywhere, it will not abandon it there, for example, like myself. Therefore, meditating on the suffering of abandoning things is meaningless, because meditating on suffering cannot abandon, because attachment and separation are not the cause of abandoning, for example, just like me, my cow is also like that. Therefore, such attachment and separation will not lead to liberation, therefore, through this, meditating on suffering will also become meaningless. Through meditating on suffering, they will, only meditate on suffering itself, that was already evident before, even so, it does not possess attachment or separation. If meditating on suffering becomes attached or separated, then meditating on suffering is reasonable, but that is not the meaning of being separated from suffering. The yogi, through meditating on suffering, will completely meditate on suffering itself. That suffering was also evident in the previous state of samsara. Even if suffering manifests, it is not in a state of attachment or separation. If suffering does not manifest, then

At that time, those who desire liberation will not abandon suffering and seek liberation, because if suffering does not manifest, there will be no real change. Suffering, such as separation from suffering, is evident to all in the world. If one is not free from attachment at that time, how can one become free from attachment by meditating on suffering? If by meditating on suffering, all memories are mixed together, and one becomes accustomed to the great stream of suffering, will one become free from attachment? That is not true. Just as one meditates on the stream of suffering with mindfulness, the passing from one happiness to another will lead to attachment. If a yogi, unmoved by the taste of peaceful bliss, does not desire the happiness of samsara? That is not right, for the view of self-grasping is the cause of arising only in nirvana. What is the cause of the arising of a crow dwelling in a cemetery? It is not that, just as a crow likes impure places, it will not give rise to liking a lotus grove. Therefore, even if suffering is made manifest by meditating on suffering, one will not possess detachment from desire, and therefore, meditating on suffering becomes meaningless. Is it not from seeing the faults of the cause of suffering that one sees detachment from desire? If so, even if one sees the faults, why will one not become free from attachment by meditating on suffering? It is said: If even towards one, due to a fault, the mind turns away for a moment, like a passionate man towards another woman, there is no real detachment towards her either. That is to say, if one sees the faults of a good woman, and thereby becomes detached from desire for a moment, even so, one will not be completely detached from desire for that woman. For example, those who have desire, although desire for some daughters may disappear, desire for other daughters will not disappear, because there is desire for all in succession. Then, if the mind wavers towards some, why will desire arise towards all objects? It is said: If there is a difference between taking and rejecting, the attachment that arises as one, that is generated by variety.
