Because it is the cause of clinging. If there is clinging, then none will ever remain permanent, even if they are contradictory, they will arise in sequence. Furthermore, desire and hatred are mutually cause and effect, even if they are contradictory, they will not cause harm. Like this, for those whose cause of suffering is related to anger, they undoubtedly want happiness. Therefore, they are related to the cause, and when approaching the cause of happiness, they are undoubtedly related to harming others and anger. Therefore, desire is the cause of anger. Seeing selflessness, because it contradicts clinging to everything, one can attain cessation. Aren't loving-kindness and so on said in the sacred Dharma to be the antidotes to hatred and so on? Therefore, if only seeing selflessness can become the path, then it is said here: Loving-kindness and so on are not contradictory, in order to completely destroy great faults, all faults are rooted in it, and that is also the view of the perishable aggregate. If that is the case, the antidote to hatred is loving-kindness, the antidote to desire is ugliness, the antidote to harm is compassion, the antidote to jealousy is joy, and the antidote to everything is equanimity, even so, loving-kindness and so on cannot completely destroy great faults, because there is no contradiction with ignorance. Even if there is ignorance, without pride, can't all faults be abandoned? That is not the case, because all afflictions such as desire are rooted in ignorance. That ignorance is also the view of the perishable aggregate, because the ignorance of affliction is the view of the perishable aggregate. The unknowing of the Arhat, because it is not afflicted, they are also liberated from ignorance, because they are free from the view of the perishable aggregate. If that is the case, then it may change, but it is not the nature of knowledge, it is ignorance, and the view of the perishable aggregate is the nature of knowledge, then how is that not the view of the perishable aggregate? The answer is: Because it is the opposite of knowledge, and it is the object of mental events.
