If consciousness does not cease temporarily, then it will contradict the fact that the nature of what has not been experienced is consciousness. If there is no experience of the consciousness of sleep, then it will be equally clear that there is no awareness in a dead body, because there is no difference between a corpse and sleep. Therefore, just as sleep can be killed, a corpse can also be revived through the blessing of aspiration. However, even if there is no experience in sleep, if it exists by its nature of ability, then what is this "ability"? If it is the mind itself, then how can there be no experience when the mind itself exists? If the ability is not the mind, but something else, then the body itself becomes the ability, because there is nothing else during sleep. In that case, since the body exists as an ability, the mind will not regress even at the time of death. Therefore, if it is said that the body of ability is destroyed at that time and another inability arises, then what is this inability? If it is said to be separated from consciousness, then, since it is also separated from consciousness during sleep, experience will not arise when awake. However, since there is breathing during sleep, the body has the ability to generate consciousness during sleep, so it becomes awake in order to generate consciousness. However, if it is said that the mind arises from being awakened from sleep through the help of breathing, then what is sleep? If it is said to be without mind, then a corpse without consciousness will also have a mind. However, if it is said that it cannot be produced solely from the body because there is no breath, then in the event of fainting and other changes, there will be no mind because there is no breath, etc. Therefore, breathing etc. are not the cause of consciousness, but breathing is the cause of mind, as has been explained before. Furthermore, even if it arises from the body in the same way, when one wakes up from sleep, experience appears as it used to, so the body or breathing is the cause. If there is the help of previous habits, is it not that consciousness arises from the body? That is not true, because the habit itself does not exist when awake, so there is no help from the body, because co-operation is emptiness. It is impossible for existence and non-existence to exist together, because it is emptiness.

The previous knowledge is the cause of awakening, not the body. If you ask whether sleep and so on are the cause of awakening, it is not only by striving without eating ghost food that one awakens, because even without striving, one sees oneself awaken. When awakening, is it not the case that the first thought of an object arises in connection with the object seen? How can what is seen now and the previous knowledge be helpful in this? There is no certainty about this either. If one awakens, one will realize the time is near in connection with what is perceived. For example, just as a miser falls asleep out of stinginess, so too it arises when awakening, so experiencing the inner tactile sensation is awakening. Whatever the habitual causes were before, when one awakens in accordance with them, the body's comfort becomes habitual. For example, when a frightened mind experiences the cause of a cowardly sight, one will also experience suffering when awakening. Similarly, a very malicious mind awakens with the pleasure of drawing a sword, which is in accordance with harming others. Therefore, the mind is not the cause of the body's arising and ceasing, but rather the cause of previously habituated knowledge. If the body were the cause, it would be irreversible. If it is abandoned due to faults, will it not become a cause? If the faults create a change that does not recur, then the changes caused by them, such as becoming smaller, thinner, and so on, and when fainting and so on cause the interruption of consciousness, it will become irreversible. If the changes caused by thinning and so on are easy to restore, then the changes in the characteristics of death caused by them can also be restored, just like the hardness of gold. Because even if gold becomes soft, it will melt due to the cause of change and become hard again. Is it not the case that changes that can be restored by restorative methods, and internal factors that cannot be restored, are transformed so that they do not recur? Therefore, is there no fault? To this it is said: To say that something is slightly unrestorable, is it because it is difficult to find a rescuer, or because life is exhausted? The fault is that there is nothing completely unrestorable. It is difficult to find a medicine or a life-sustaining doctor that can reverse the changes caused by faults such as wind.
