If compassion and so on are not actions, then why are they spoken of? It is true, but the reason for speaking of detachment is not non-existent, because speaking is for the sake of others, and for the sake of accomplishing the benefit of others, so it is reasonable to speak of it with the intention of accomplishing their benefit. Therefore, the very desire to speak of this (detachment) is the nature of compassion itself, and therefore it is shown by the nature of compassion. If that is the case, then, only with the nature of thinking of benefiting others, compassion itself is the cause of language, but loving-kindness and so on are not, because those are merely the nature of the difference of thoughts. Then, what is the use of the word 'and so on'? It is true, but in order to express that the mental dharmas such as loving-kindness existing in detachment are also not the nature of desire, it is said in that way. For that very reason, compassion is mentioned by transcending the order. Why is it not like that? Because it is said 'also others'. Loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity do not depend on the view of self and what belongs to self, but arise only from habituation, which will be explained in the second chapter. Even though it is the root of habituation, how is it not influenced by the view of self and so on? Even though it is its root, it is like desire and so on, because it enters spontaneously, so there is no need to strive to accomplish it, otherwise there would be a fault. If it exists in that way, just as speaking of attachment, detachment is also similar to it, because both of these recognize that what is desired to be expressed is desire itself, so what is desired to be expressed does not exist in the difference between attachment and detachment. Therefore, what is said, 'the difference cannot be recognized from the generality of the result' is only words, that is, it cannot be recognized from the generality of words. However, because the nature of desire wants to express and is confused. For what is it confused, and why are terms not used in the same way as that? It is said, 'the thought is'. Not understanding the thought of calling detachment attachment, or calling attachment detachment. In that way, it is said that the cause of the confusion of sound is only the cause of desire. Because of not understanding, before that, one recognizes such a desire.
