Just like a sprout emerges from an existing seed. Even if there is understanding, doubt arises because of having residual inference. Because not seeing entry into the dissimilar side is having residual inference, and even so, doubt still arises. Stones and the like that are devoid of desire and so on are the dissimilar side. Regarding them, because the body and so on are not seen, when relying on not seeing entry into the dissimilar side and establishing the body and so on in order to prove desire, at that time, because it is not a certainty of turning back from the dissimilar side, doubt will arise. Even if those without desire are not seen, it is not the case that they are simply non-existent because they are not seen. Because there is also no clinging to self and so on in them, is it because of the absence of these that there is no desire, or is it because of the absence of a body that there is no desire? Because the turning back is uncertain. If someone says that because clinging to self and so on is also a cause, the body and so on are not assembled, then the body and so on themselves are not what causes the inference, but rather because the concomitance and turning back have been established. Even so, if it is said that the existence and non-existence of these things in the similar and dissimilar sides have been established, that is not correct. Because for them, the turning back is also uncertain, just as for things without mind there is no body, so too the clinging to self and so on has not been established. Therefore, because there is no clinging to self and so on, is it that those without mind do not have desire and so on, or is it that they do not have a body? This is completely uncertain. In order to further explain the semblance of a reason that does not possess the three characteristics, it is said, "Likewise." Because both of these express having a remainder, in order to understand, just as inferring the result merely from not seeing the assembled cause on the dissimilar side is like a semblance of valid cognition, similarly, knowing the reason from observing a common result merely from not seeing the result is also like a semblance of valid cognition. What is an example? It is said, "From words." The meaning is that others infer desire from some words, but that does not belong to the three reasons. If it is asked again, do things without mind have des

If it is not because the word is not seen, then this is a fallacy of the reason of effect. Even so, since the word is a common effect, it is not seen in the dissimilar side. The word is: Just wanting to speak, without any difference, it is produced, whether accompanied by desire or empty of desire, it is taken, because it is produced by it. Therefore, in the dissimilar side, is it because there is no mere desire to speak that the word is not seen, or is it because there is no desire? The reason of effect is not possible. Therefore, just as inferring non-cause from non-effect, because it is uncertain, it is a fallacious reason, just like common and uncommon, because from uncertainty it also becomes uncertain. Because the generality of the effect is the object, it is said to move. Because actions and words etc. are not the effect of mere desire. By saying "etc.", anger etc. are included. Even if desire etc. exist, it is not that the nature of the word is seen as previously non-existent, because it is possible to exist even without desire. If the word is not the effect of desire, then it will not arise even once, because what is not the cause will not arise even once. Therefore, it is said "wanting to speak generally". Desire is the cause and condition of merely wanting to speak, and wanting to speak is also consciousness. It is also the nature of various differences, with the nature of existence and non-existence of desire etc. from moment to moment. Then, the nature arises from the consciousness accompanied by desire, sometimes from having hatred, sometimes from being separated from both, because of the difference, even if the word is wrong, it is possible to realize that merely wanting to speak is the cause because there is no error, just like fire from smoke. Mere desire is not. Therefore, just as seeing smoke is not inferring the fire produced from leaves, similarly from the word it is not merely desire, but merely wanting to speak. If desire is not the difference of wanting to speak, but
