Distinguishing does not lead to clear apprehension. If the universal 'cow' is itself the nature of 'cow,' and therefore it clearly apprehends and is called 'cow,' then, since the number 'two' is itself the nature of 'two,' for each individual, there should also arise the understanding of 'two, two.' Similarly, for a being with limbs, in each of the limbs, for each individual limb, there should arise the thought, 'This is a being with limbs.' And actions should also produce the thought 'color, color' for trees and so on. However, if one thinks that the ability to generate understanding belongs only to the universal, and not to numbers and so on, that is irrelevant. Because upon such examination, such understanding is seen, and because of the connection with one and many, such understanding arises. But that is not so certain. If here, the connection of one and many could closely include the knowledge that depends on itself, then numbers and so on should also be able to include it. If the connection only reaches that extent, and therefore the knowledge dependent on it cannot be obtained in other situations, then the universal would also be the same. Like this, if the ability also has such a knowledge associated with an object, then, because this is the nature of the object, numbers and so on would also be the same. Because the knowledge 'It is blue' arises for a single blue thing, it will depend on that ability, so it is not that it will not arise for other things that will produce knowledge. However, if this is neither associated with an object nor unreal, then the ability will also be the same. The explanation for this is, 'If it is like that, then...' That is what is said. In that way, the essence would be confused. If only two manifest as two, and not one, then how can there be an understanding of 'two, two' for both? Therefore, how can knowledge be the very object of non-difference? Similarly, things are not the cause of grasping as limbs in each of the limbs, for each individual limb, just like the universal. When speech abides in two itself, if it does not abide in each individual, then it will not abide in any. However, if it abides, then how is it that one does not understand it that way for each individual? Like this, if two does not completely abide in each individual, but it does abide, therefore one will understand it that way.

O! If a partless thing abides in many, it will not be completely fulfilled in each one, and it will necessarily become a thing with parts. Therefore, as such, it is not the ultimate truth. After it has been established like that, by "By what own nature," etc., through the door of refuting the difference between the general and the particular, relying on the explanation of the appearance of the mind as the nature of the general, in order to refute "That is not the ultimate truth," others say, "Is it like that?" According to the way it has been explained, although there is no general of external objects, by the power of the mind's thought, the general is accepted, so only the appearance of the mind becomes the general. Like this, when the general is shown by the mind's thought, it is falsely imputed that it appears as non-different from oneself, and it is explained as being mixed, so this non-difference itself is the general. That is also existent, so it is not reasonable to say that it is not the ultimate truth. How is it existent? Answer: Because it is the nature of knowing. If you ask: In order to refute that, the non-existent is also a thesis, so that is not it. Answer: If again the appearance of knowing is non-different, like that, because of these, whatever change, that will not become the same in meaning. Because those do not have the same, so those also do not become the general of those. That is also not existent, like this, the appearance of the mind and knowing are not different. Showing that the nature of the object of external objects is only different from that, is called "other object." Other object is different object, it is the nature of depending on knowing. Having become like that, how will this follow, by what will this become the general of that, how will it mix with that? This is what is said, "In the nature of knowing." This is knowing, and these are objects, like that, it is explaining difference. Now, in the treatise of "By what own nature," etc., by showing how the appearance of knowing is explained as the nature of the general, the dispute is made, that is, "If that's own nature," etc. Because of clinging to the object itself, that refers to the appearance of the mind at that time. The so-called "like that," if you ask: Is it the nature of knowing, because of the objects, is it applying terms by confusion? Then it is said like that.
