The teacher said, "This is the very nature." Why? Because it gives rise to the wisdom that appears there, so that itself becomes the nature to be expressed. That is, the nature that is separated from everything. Sound does not establish (the nature) in the mind. If it is said, "That itself is not established," then is it saying, "That is not established, but others are established"? In response to this, let's say for now, "That is not established," because if it were, it would become a fault because it is a coarse form and therefore not apprehended by the root consciousness. If the very nature of the object is established by expressing it here, then it will become as clear as the direct perception of the senses. Sound establishes its nature by generating wisdom with the aspect of meaning, because the ultimate meaning of that wisdom itself is only its aspect. Even if sound makes the meaning clear, it is said that the consciousness with the aspect of meaning should be generated, which is explained in relation to the established tenets of permanence. This is not the object of manifest clinging. Even if one engages in cognition with an object of meaning without aspects, one cognizes the nature of the meaning in such a way that the very nature of the meaning-cognition is realized as it is. Sound becomes solely the wisdom of meaning. For example, when a potter manifestly accomplishes a pot or creates a lump of clay, he focuses on how the very nature of the pot is formed. By the act of focusing immediately on that, it is said, "This person made the pot." If it becomes other than how it is formed, then it becomes making something else, not the potter. Not everything that changes there becomes pottery. Similarly, even if it is admitted that conceptual thought understands meaning, or that sound is the cause of understanding meaning, then the nature of understanding meaning should be examined. If the focus is on how meaning is understood, then this is the understanding of meaning and the cause of sound understanding meaning. Because it has the function of the senses, the understanding of meaning is the focus when cognizing meaning. Regarding the nature in which the meaning becomes clear

Because this itself is the knowledge of meaning, and for direct perception, the manifestation of meaning is indisputable. Therefore, if conceptual thought is also the knowledge of meaning, then here too, meaning will manifest, so how can the objects of sound and inference transcend the senses? If someone says, it is because it is knowledge not born from the senses. Then, the object that is manifesting is either not beyond the senses, or it is said to be direct perception, but not merely a connection of the senses. However, the very fact that this (conceptual thought) has become like this is because of its connection with the senses, so it is said not to be beyond the senses. Therefore, the object that is taken as an object by knowledge itself is manifest and will become direct perception. Therefore, if the knowledge of conceptual thought enters, the object will not become manifest or become direct perception. Then, what is it that, although taken as an object by knowledge, does not change, that will become manifest, or what else will become direct perception? Therefore, if it itself is the object of meaning, because there is no confusion in the manifestation of meaning, all cognitions that take meaning as their object are direct perception, and sound and so on will also become the same as the senses. If that essence is not placed in the mind, then what is placed? It is said, "This is like that." The former prohibits the establishment of the essence of meaning, while this explains the establishment of another essence. The speaker thinks, "I should know what the essence that is appropriate at the moment is," and wants to make it the object of cognition, but in the end, it only creates an image of conceptual thought. The meaning that is cognized by the knowledge of the senses is just like the way this image has become. It is similar to its own appearance, like an image in a mirror. Because without such an appearance, there would be no such knowledge. Conceptual thought does not cognize in the way that meaning changes, because that would lead to the fault of not being deceived by the senses. Therefore, this (conceptual thought) is the very nature of knowledge that changes into something else. Cognizing it as it is, or possessing an appearance that has become like that, because it is certain that it is cognized in that way, it is said that the image of the appearance of conceptual thought is inconsistent with meaning. Therefore, because of this meaning, the
