It is not so. Where are these two, "the knowledges to be inferred," said to be? How is it not said? Like this, it is explained for the establishment of inference, and from the beginning, "property of the subject" and so on are said. When establishing it, stating the characteristics of the reason is a limb, because it arises from the reason. Its characteristics are the three modes, and these three exist. These three are also related to two out of the two kinds of relations. Thus, the knowledge to be inferred produced by such a reason is twofold, and the knowledge to be inferred is the inference itself. These two, produced by a sign possessing two kinds of natural relation, are valid cognitions. Why? Because they arise from that. For the time being, the inference arising from a definite sign is called realization itself. As said before, when arising from a sign of natural relation, the knowledge to be inferred also arises from the inference itself. Like this, arising from the sign of the nature of what is to be inferred is just arising from what is to be inferred. Whatever arises from the sign that is the result of what is to be inferred is also the same. When that knowledge arises in the meaning of what is to be inferred, it is also valid because it is definitely present, because it is the clear nature of itself, and thus these two are valid cognitions solely by the clarity of the meaning. If there is no clear meaning, then the meaning will not become clear, which is not possible. What is said is: there is no confusion there, etc. Because it does not go beyond the meaning of its own result, it is certain to be clear. "Like direct perception" is an example. For example, arising from the meaning, because there is no confusion about the meaning, the clear nature of the meaning is valid cognition, and so are these two. Is that knowledge also direct perception itself for the meaning because it arises from the meaning? The meaning itself produces knowledge, which makes itself clear. Therefore, the inference produced by the inference.

If it is said that the knowable and the to-be-known by inference, like direct perception, actually make the meaning clear, then (the answer is) it has already been said that it is not the appearance itself. Because the knowable and the to-be-known by inference actually make things clear, so for it, the knowable and the to-be-known by inference that become direct perception are not the appearance of the to-be-known. If the cause of the appearance of things has no difference, then how can these two not be the appearance of things, and not be direct perception? (The answer is) It has been said that it is because it is not produced from things. Because the knowable and the to-be-known by inference, like direct perception, actually make things clear, the knowable and the to-be-known by inference are not directly produced from the to-be-known. However, even if it is impermanent and has the nature of being made, it can generate discriminating wisdom because it has experienced being made and is interrupted. For the discrimination that is a sign or has a sign, none is directly produced from things. Similarly, fire is also the cause of its own wisdom because it has experienced its own result, smoke, and is interrupted. Therefore, the meaning is this: As said, because it has a connection, there is no confusion for the sign to be inferred. If it exists, then it is certain that the thing to be proven exists, thereby causing the knower to enter into inference, which is the measure itself that causes it to enter, because the thing itself is known in that way. In this way, inference is not produced solely from the power of causes and conditions, like direct perception. However, in order to know the unknown, one must strive for the reasoning of inference. This is also reasonable, because if that meaning is known from other things, then that other thing must be determined to be without confusion, so it is reasonable to know that meaning from that thing. Knowing the thing in that state is the measure. If one cannot determine that other things are without confusion, then one cannot observe, or it will become doubt, so knowledge is not the measure. However, if the unobserved connection becomes certain from confusion, even so, merely being certain, discrimination is not the measure, because unlike direct perception, it is not the nature itself that makes the meaning clear. For the meaning to be clear, it is the accomplishment of meaning...
