The meaning is that understanding someone with a stick is not understanding the stick itself. To explain that immediately after understanding caste etc., the object of understanding is only the spotted cow etc., and there is nothing else, so it says, "If only it appears," meaning that if it does not include anything else, there will be no difference, i.e., it will not be distinguished from other things. Even if it is not gradual understanding, but if it is only understanding the difference, then both are understanding. To show that this is also the fault you mentioned, it says, "If it is appearance." The so-called "object of knowledge with difference" refers to distinguishing other individuals, the knowledge of the object of knowledge of the individual, through the difference that one possesses, distinguishing oneself from other individuals, or from what the individual possesses. To illustrate these two considerations, it says, "Dependent on oneself." Merely nominal, it refers to merely clinging to parts and wholes. To illustrate that if it appears like direct perception, then the two will become one word, because both are unrelated, so they will appear autonomously, so it says, "Merely nominal." Don't cows and longevity and actions, etc., have opposing understandings and special understandings? For what reason are spotted cows, etc., not cows, but rather to be the longevity of things? If you think so, even if there is a change, it refers to place and time, etc. Merely appearing is the appearance of sin. Spotted cows, etc., are different from horses, etc., because they have different characteristics such as spots. Longevity is also, from things that are not longevity, the thing itself appears with some differences, and this is longevity. To explain that because the difference that one possesses is not understood, beings will not be opposed in meaning, or will not be distinguished, so it says, "Related to other meanings," referring to those who have sticks, etc. The so-called nature refers to cows and longevity, etc. The so-called distinction is because it is based on seeing it, so it is its object, that is, the nature of combining with it. The difference in characteristics itself is not opposition. Therefore, the understanding of cows and longevity, etc., is the nature of

The special view comes from linguistic expression, which shows that it is not a summary of what is seen. Therefore, if one thinks that shadows, etc., which follow (things), are not manifest objects because the essence of following is an ox, so it can only be understood through concepts, then (the scripture says): What is the consciousness with following? This is the meaning (of the scripture). Sound is the expresser. Clarity is the particularity because they manifest things, and attachment to them has this way. Sound and clarity appear, but not as a universal appearance, because that would lead to the absence of clarity. However, only clarity itself has similar aspects that can be understood by knowledge. The essence of clarity is the object of the eye, and it comes from the knowledge of the eye. Because there is no seeing, it is similarity. If it is said that eye consciousness clings to particularity, and concepts cling to similarity, that is unreasonable, because if both cling to the same thing, then both will manifest two essences. To illustrate this, (the scripture says): Different minds are the determination of the particular and the universal essence. If they cling to the production of the same thing, they will not change, and they are not produced from the internal collection. If it is said that those (features) with aspects such as color and different from the essence of clarity do not produce variegated sensory consciousness, it is because there are no two appearances. This is the meaning of understanding. If the difference of minds is not admitted due to the difference of internal and external causes, then it will not change anything. This is the view of the commentator. Separate determination means the degree of determination. For infinite things, if there is no way to clearly express the infinite particularities of variegation, etc., then for those things that are not in the mind, it is impossible to indicate or cling to them. This shows the meaning of the lack of separate determination. However, if the clarity taken from the manifest is different from the universal, then one might think that what can be conceptualized is not a manifest object. To solve this problem, (the scripture) mentions "what is combined with clarity is universal." The senses do not cling.
