A Commentary on the Ornament of Valid Cognition, Victorious One. A Commentary on the Ornament of Valid Cognition, Victorious One. This commentary, which purifies the obscurations of the mind regarding the 'Compendium' and its 'Ornament,' will become a Victorious One upon being seen by the wise, who possess supreme qualities. The first chapter, which serves as a method for explaining the Teacher's treatise, explains inference. The second chapter, with half a verse called "Valid Cognition," establishes valid cognition. The third is the explanation of direct perception. It is not that the speaker and listener are purified, because the meaning is not explicitly stated. With this intention, the general characteristic is mentioned. If this is the explanation of the Teacher's treatise, then it is reasonable to show, while explaining the first chapter, the general characteristic of valid cognitions and the difference in arranging other treatises after that. Thus, "Valid cognition is unerring knowledge" shows the general characteristic. The specific characteristics of those are, "Direct perception and inference," and so on, which are made clear by stating the distinctions that appear separately. Is this determination of number not done first because it is a branch of the characteristic? Because when establishing clear distinctions, it is not possible to state the defining characteristics of each clear one. Therefore, establishing clear distinctions is primarily because there is nothing other than the nature of the distinction of one's own nature, so they themselves understand those two. Other valid cognitions are merely the objects to be measured by them, so accomplishing the task of completing the activity is beyond the reasoning of accomplishment, that is the meaning. Valid cognition is reasoning, and the two are objects to be measured, the object of reasoning, that is, the appearance of clarity and non-clarity separately is why there are two. This clear separate appearance itself is the object of imputation as meaning itself, because it is the object to be directly produced by meaning, so it is capable. The separate appearance of the unclear object is the object of imputation as being produced indirectly by meaning, so it is incapable, because these two aspects

There is no other form than that; by what other means is it measured? This is the concluding word. Since clear and distinct appearances are the very meaning, if it were potency, then even to one with blurred vision, hairs and the like would appear distinctly. If one thinks thus, then it is said, "What is seen by one with blurred vision," for if there is no harm, then clear and distinct appearance is the nature of potency, so it is not the fault of being too pervasive. If the distinct appearance of particulars is actually the producer of particulars, then likewise, the distinct appearance of universals should also become the actual producer of universals. Why is it said that it is only the producer of particulars through mediation? If one thinks thus, then it is said, "The same object," for from the concomitance and contraposition that are different from the particulars, potency cannot be understood, so it will be explained that it is for this reason that it is thought. If one thing becomes two forms, how is that? It is said, "The distinction of cognition," which is the nature of clarity and non-clarity. If the experience of its distinction is also non-different, then it is said, "The distinction of cognition also." If there is no difference between distinct appearances and what possesses them, then it is said, "That itself is." If they are different, then the experience is different, but the distinct appearances do not become different. If one thinks thus, then it is, "If the distinction of cognition." Even if it is a distinction, how is the object of knowledge, which exists by the power of knowledge, distinguished from the distinction of the object of knowledge? To show this, it is said, "Knowledge and objects of knowledge." If potency through mediation is the characteristic of the general, how is it said to be without potency? It is said, "Through mediation," negating that there is no other potency than the potency that actually produces. "Actual" refers to hairs and the like. "Through mediation" refers to sound. The measure that harms is non-deceptive knowledge. Or both are actual, like this, some knowledge actually appears as capable of doing things with the characteristics of burning and cooking, while for other knowledge, there is no actual
