The term "Rāṇa" is not definitive in each individual case. If it is manifest cognition that does not degenerate, then inference is not a valid means of cognition. If the function has degenerated, then thinking "it is" is from "if there is memory" etc., up to "just as it is a valid means of cognition." "It is not, because for it" refers to the reason of inherent nature. "Here it is not so" refers to seeing the distinction. "So" refers to like inference of inherent nature or like sudden inference. "Previously like that" refers to holding the connection. "Because it is absent merely due to forgetting, it is not inference of inherent nature, and showing that it is not sudden inference" means produced by habituation. "From what is produced by habituation" means there is no habituation for sudden inference. "Because it is possible to change into another form" means because of forgetting, and because it has not been promised that inference is meaningful with conceptualization. "If not forgotten, then showing that inference is only the object of the general characteristic" means "by direct perception." "If" etc. is the established tenet. "For it" refers to what is being born. "The thing that is born is established" means the thing that was seen before is established. "Showing that holding another as that is mistaken" means "if seen, that thing." The establishment of direct perception alone or what is established from seeing the distinction is not a valid means of cognition, showing "it is holding what is to be grasped" means "established by that." Explaining this itself is "what is not seen is." "If not grasped" means by direct perception. "If inference holds the object" means what is grasped by direct perception itself is held by seeing the distinction. "Direct perception and the other" means direct perception and what is to be inferred. "Once one is established" means it is sufficient that it is established from only one of the two. "What do the two do, because it depends on it" means because it depends on the action of the function of the eye etc. At the time when appearance exists, it is also not holding, so it is said.

That which is called "appearance" has been spoken of. If so, are these valid cognitions or something else? It is called "connecting with the boundary of others," which is the attachment that is simultaneous with what was seen before. The so-called "determination is memory," therefore, it is direct perception, that is the meaning. In order to establish that memory itself does not exist, this depends on signs, that is, it depends on signs such as similarity. If it is said that because it exists only in memory itself, it is deluded, then no, it has been said "not because of delusion." The explanation is clear. Direct perception is free from conceptual thought, direct perception itself can be established. Having seen this explanation, in order to enter the sutra to be explained, what is shown is "in this direct perception" and so on. The appearance that is the opposite of this is contrary to it. The so-called "being free from conceptual thought, its nature can be established by direct perception itself" means that when negating its nature, it is considered to be non-apprehension without difference, and when negating difference, it shows the difference of nature, that is, "each is its own object of knowledge." Name is sound, and that which has a basis is the appearance that can become sound, this is a synonym. Showing that other conditions are complete, that is, "gathering the mind in all places." From all places, that is, from all objects. Mind is conceptual thought. Without wavering, that is, because the mind does not tremble, because it is free from the wind of conceptual thought. Even if there is no conceptual thought, it exists, therefore, saying that the absence of conceptual thought is other, this is said because of this reason, that is, in order to show that in that state there is no conceptual thought, only direct perception is conceptual thought, that is, "only direct perception." In that state, is it not also followed by the aspect of conceptual thought itself? If there is no it, how can its non-existence be determined? If the determination is not reason, then because there is no difference, there is no, thinking like this is "if in this." Experience is that for its own object, its own function follows, producing conceptual thought, and it arises before that, and it is not the same as it, is it not? For saying this, also distinguish a little, that is, "if you distinguish a little." Just as there is conceptual thought, the absence of conceptual thought also establishes as its own nature, then producing conceptual thought
