Moreover, in order to comply, the views of others are stated. This also shows that it refutes the arguments of other opponents, so it says, "As it is said." After negating "because it is not its object," saying "because the object is the same" means that the subject has been distinguished, and saying that it is not manifest cognition that understands the sign as a reason is because it is not manifest. This refutes the views stated by others, and is called grasping the sign by the relation itself. The relation of the general nature of common dharmas is not manifest, because it is not its object. If it is grasped by inference, then it shows that there is no limit, so it says, "If that is the case." Or, if there is no manifest probandum from habituation, then it is thought that the non-arising sign is grasped as such. At that time, the manifest is the appearance of the subject itself. If it is not the appearance itself, if it does not have it, then it only does not grasp the non-arising, so it says, "Or the sign is." "As it is" refers to inference. Grasping the non-arising itself without the subject is the function of the sign, and it is shown that grasping the subject is also in accordance with this, that is, "from extreme habituation," etc. The nature of smoke is habituated to the characteristic of not being compatible with the collection of sparks. Even if fire is not recognized, it is approximately expressed by the extremely clear experience, which is the meaning of the sign. If there is no habituation, how can the sign be grasped? It is said, "In the smoke itself," even if fire is not grasped at that time, it is also included in grasping the sign. That is its meaning. Whatever is said to be determined to be related to others is grasping the sign, and that is only grasping the subject, because there is no cognizer, so it is shown by saying, "Its relation to fire itself." Inference arising from non-apprehension, because it has the object of non-existence, is it not the case that even through indirect means, knowledge of the sign and the subject is not related to things? Thinking that other things do not exist, and saying that it is only the object of things, therefore the relation of knowledge and other knowable things is also not, because it is manifest.
