Just like that, to show that it is not always produced by means, this is what is meant by "if by inference." If one is familiar with the manifest through signs, then, is it that, like the manifest, one takes the hidden things that are not grasped as objects, or does it arise from grasping? If it is non-grasping, then here too, from "the sign of" and so on, up to "by establishing inference as valid cognition, what should we do for ourselves" has already been shown. If it is grasping, then, for this, even if it is hidden, it has also been shown that it arises "from the manifest." For "the nature of similarity," it refers to the nature seen in the example, just as it is said: "Hidden from the nature of similarity itself." Merely the arising of that appearing knowledge, that very object of it, through the pervasion of this, is shown to be realized by this, as "the knowledge of sound is also." To the saying that "this itself is closely measured by those with reason," "closely measured" is said. For example, Let "Bamen" do this, this insertion, without understanding the sound of "Bamen," even if one has the understanding of the name of the sound "Baman," one will not understand "Bamen." To this, the monastery person says, what is a calf like, "Bamen" is like that, and says "Bamen" is like a calf. Those who have heard this also see the round thing, remember the previously shown words, and determine that it is like a calf. That determination is the result of close measurement. It is not the determination of the connection between name and named, because, following the insertion, one's own nature of remembering the manifest object will arise. Inference is not merely the object of the manifest, because the hidden is its object. Here, whether it is the named itself or something else, it is the memory of the manifest itself. For this, the manifest is special, for inference, it is the hidden, this is the meaning. Similarity itself is not the object of the manifest, for the object that is close and not different in characteristics, merely arising from the appearance of conceptual thought, that is its object itself, through which it is realized, therefore, the conceptual thought that appears similar in its own nature, because it realizes the object of similarity itself, is the reason of nature, not another valid cognition. Victory.

For example, seeing a complete cow, if one has not seen the cow dung, if it is not close to the cow, one knows "this is like a cow," which is direct perception. And "this is similar to a cow" is called inference. Here also, the direct perception of seeing things before and after. Conceptual thought has similarity as its object, so it is only the nature hetu. What shows this is "its nature direct perception." For those who think that conceptual thought is direct perception, direct perception is this. Like this, because one does not know "this is similar to it," so through recognizing "this is similar to it," the similarity of this is the similarity of that, merely recognizing the similarity of that, recognizing the similarity of this is similar, showing that there is no difference, is "like this, this is similar to it." For those who say there is no direct perception, what follows me is similarity, its expression is conceptual thought is the nature hetu, what shows this is "following it." The conceptual thought that appears as similarity is that appearing conceptual thought, the object of that which arises only from that appearance. For example, the conceptual thought of a cow appearing in a hidden place is also the nature hetu, the subsequent inference of one's own meaning, from the object of the hidden place etc. that arises only from appearing there. When making others understand one's own understanding, saying "this is similar to this," the object of such conceptual thought is only the cow, because it has a hidden place, just like the object of the hidden place etc. of the cow's knowledge, thus saying the expression. What says this is "this is similar to it," here also, the nature of that thing that is not contradictory to its nature is "this is similar to it," the object of recognition is the knowledge of recognition itself, just like the hidden place etc. of the cow's knowledge, the object of conceptual thought is similarity, that also is the nature of things that are not different in nature, thinking that it is recognized only through that conceptual thought. The nature of any thing, and the similarity of what is observed, are both through the previous and subsequent direct perceptions.
