However, that "I" itself, that is what it means. The essence of self-awareness, both prior and subsequent, is just like the present, and will only become the present. This is the answer, meaning "that is how it is." In terms of the ultimate aspect, knowledge is also self-awareness. If it is separated from the prior and subsequent parts, then it is only impermanent. If the prior and so on are ignorance, then how can one know if it is separated from its distinctions? Even the constant itself that is one with it, if there is no grasping, it will not become grasping. Therefore, because it is neither constant nor impermanent, such is the nature of the Tathagata itself, and not others. Moreover, it is said: "From oneself, realize the essence of oneself." This is what is to be shown: "Other than self-awareness." This is saying that the prior is for proving. If things are like this, then the knowledge of Ishvara is constant, and having promised that he himself is Ishvara, then impermanence itself is shown. Is the "I" other than knowledge not Ishvara? It is not knowledge. Its knowledge is just other, like the objects of knowledge, such as us and so on. The "I" of us and so on, and the objects of mind and senses and so on are definite, and the only distinction of this is saying "it is only mind, but it is all objects." The "I" itself is constant, because when seen on other days, it will also become saying "these can also be seen on later days." Because there is a seer, the prior recognition is understood to be constant. And, Ishvara is also the seer, therefore one thinks that he is constant. For this, it is said: "Those who arise in sequence, because it is unreasonable to arise from the constant." For the time being, the "I" that does not benefit anyone like the sky is not promised. So what is it? It is not the reason for understanding with meaning. That truth of it is also unreasonable in any way, because it is constant. That prior seeing of "this" will also be explained, that is its meaning. That itself, like the sky, is constant, is pervasive, and so on, this is to establish the ground. The knowable arises in sequence.

Since it is impermanent, isn't it unreasonable for consciousness to arise gradually? From the union of self and mind, what arises, what will arise, and what is the same in the present object, knowing as one, that is, holding one meaning, only arises simultaneously. Having arisen in this way, since there is no cause for destruction, it is not destroyed. What is the need for gradual arising? Therefore, it is said, "Constant and pervasive." If the union of self and mind can generate such consciousness, because we children and others also have it, it is shown that it will become such consciousness, that is, "If that very nature." "All times" refers to the state of us children and others. Or, thinking that from the union of self and mind, which is free from the defilements of ignorance and so on and has become excellent, such consciousness will arise, but not at other times, therefore it is said, "If there is a difference." For the non-differentiated self, it is indeed so, because becoming the lord and so on, becoming powerful, and being established from oneself, becoming differentiated, it is only known as such, but we children and others do not have it, therefore it is thought not to be. "Or even without difference." The answer is no, because it cannot be relied upon. "Because it is not permissible to rely on" is the meaning. The arising of excellent Dharma, the qualities of becoming the lord and so on, are only the cause of the arising of consciousness that is excellent by nature, but not the cause of freedom. If so, what is said by the name of freedom, which is the gathering of those qualities, will become the cause of constancy, therefore thinking, "Depending on that, that also," it is said, "Depending on that," that refers to the one with qualities, depending on that, refers to relying on those qualities, merely relying on the qualities themselves is the cause, but not the only one, because it is not seen. Therefore, the constant qualities should not reasonably be the cause, that is the meaning. If, like the pervasive lord, relying on the support is also constant, and the qualities themselves are also, then, "Relying on that and that" is said, the place of reliance is beneficial.
