It is also not right, because those are of the same kind. The ability will change because of this. Like this, all kinds of conceptualizations, one must correctly recognize that they arise in sequence. Consciousnesses are determined by relying on the generation of consciousnesses of the same kind, but it is not universal. Like this, one must correctly recognize that all kinds of conceptualizations arise in sequence. Eye consciousnesses, etc., do not generate eye consciousnesses, etc., of the same kind, but it is not all. Regarding this, if there is a contradiction in generating the nature of the apprehended and the apprehender, which are not similar? If someone asks: The conceptualization called "recognition," although it is a conceptualization, doesn't it acknowledge the appearing object? The answer is: It does not acknowledge, if that is the case, then it is not. Like this: For the meaning of what is seen, the recognition of awareness, with appearance as direct perception, that awareness is also refuted. Because the form of the senses does not have the ability to grasp before and after, the thought that the appearing conceptualization itself is direct perception is also refuted. Like this: Awareness does not appear, how can it be direct perception? Even if it appears, because it is confused, it is not a valid cognition. Like this: Hair, eggs, and candles, etc., for different awarenesses, there is no appearance, how can such a mind become direct perception? However, because there is harm there, it is not direct perception, if it is not direct perception, then what is the harm? It is being interrupted. For this, there is also the characteristic of the appearance of the prior and subsequent nature being completely cut off. Therefore, from recognition, it is impossible to determine that letters, etc., are one. Because it is not a valid cognition. Although the letter molds of the letters are different, through recognition, they become one. Such awareness, for long, etc., will not grasp in any way. What is said about knowledge is only words, this is to explain that recognition is a valid cognition. Furthermore, recognition is not born from the senses, nor is it direct perception, like this: From the previous experience of memory, its dharma, without superimposition, it itself, will not know what this is. That is also born from the senses. Without previous experience, there will be no recollection,

Without memory, one cannot recognize the nature of "that is this." The nature of recognition is to perceive the present experience as one with the past experience. Without memory, one does not perceive things as their past nature. The object of memory is not the object of direct perception, otherwise, all past experiences would become direct perceptions, then what use would there be for sense faculties like mine? If it is said that for a certain ornament, even if one has seen it before, one may not remember it, therefore it is necessary to rely on the function of the present sense faculties. If it is necessary to rely on it, then it would become the function of the sense faculties themselves, what use is it to go to the object? If it is said that because there is no suitable object, the sense faculties cannot function. If that is the case, then there would be no recognition from seeing things in other places. The nature that is associated with other objects does not exist in the suitable object. Only when it is associated with both objects does it exist in the suitable object, therefore there is no fault in this. If it is said, why not consider it as without memory? If so, how can memory become "that is this"? If it is said that because the association is for the sake of memory, therefore the previous ones have no fault. Then, recognition is not a valid cognition. If it is said that it is without association, not with association. Then, because it has no association with the past object and time, it is only the nature of the present, therefore the previous and the later ones are different. If it is said that in order to recognize "that is this," if it is not different, then with what does one recognize that "that"? Is this not analyzing that "that"? Mere recognition is not a valid cognition, if it is not so, then why bother to prove direct perception? If it is said that one recognizes it as the same as the past time, etc. If it is said that it is permanent, then all things will become permanent, then birth is also. If one recognizes it as the nature of the present, then it is also permanent. If it is said that if the moment arises at that instant, how can it be impermanent? If it is said that if it has not arisen before, then it also exists. How can the unarisen exist, how can the destroyed exist, such arguments are the same. For what did not exist before and what does not exist after destruction, there is no difference. The difference is that destruction is memory. What arose previously is also the result of existence.
