Then, isn't it the case that the meaning of characteristics such as length is understood? Although it is understood, it is not the case that the meaning is understood by the characteristics of length and so on. Therefore, just as with short and two, it will be understood that these are two line segments, but not another length. If, according to the view that one's own mind is self-aware, how does one grasp length and so on? When a mind with that aspect arises, it is established as perceiving length. Then, even according to the view that says it is not self-aware, there is still the same arising of a mind with that aspect, but it is merely cognized by another mind. There is no difference between these two cases. As it says: Because the knowable itself, the knowable is, known by another like external objects. Therefore, the mind is also knowable, there will be another knower. This is not reasonable, because it will also become like this: Because the illuminable itself, the illuminable is, illuminated by another like a pot. Therefore, the lamp will also, become illuminated by another. This has already been explained a little. If the previous mind is known by another mind, then because at that time there is no mind with that aspect, and also because there is no object at that time, it will be shown that from the state of no mind, all experiences will be destroyed. Or, if the line segments themselves are non-existent, therefore length and so on are not grasped, then this is also not reasonable, as it says: If there is no order in existence, because the mind appears simultaneously, letters without order will not become long. Understanding existence without order will not become length and so on, because length is established from the perspective of knowing with time. If the line segments themselves are also ordered, then it is not so, because at the final moment it will be understood that this is long and so on. At that time there is no understanding of knowledge, because that mind is different from the previous one. Or, if this is the same one grasping the container and the line segment, then this is also not reasonable, as it says: Because they do not mix with each other, how can ordered letters, help the unordered. Because they do not exist with each other, they are not related to the letters.

Then, how does one make the earlier and later consciousnesses become a single whole? Since consciousness holds onto objects, if the objects are different, the consciousnesses are also different, so how does one understand it as being sequential? As it is said, if one does not understand any meaning, the consciousness is not directed; if one understands the meaning, then it is understood through inference. Just as understanding the meaning and following the meaning to understand, it is also from different to different. Just like this, worldly people say, "Such a consciousness arose in me." However, this is the understanding of the oneness of the essence of things, such as length, etc. Just like this, what arises first is the single length, etc. Therefore, by understanding that length is one, the consciousness of length is also one. If one says that, it is also not true. Like this: If the former remains between the ends, then the sound will increase below. Because the latter holds non-sequentially, the sequential consciousness will also not exist. If this is the essence of the letter, then because the first consciousness understands it, it will not remain in time. Even when seeing the previous part, all the consciousnesses will understand length, etc. If understanding others is length, etc., then at that time it will not be said that length is one. However, if the former also follows after the latter, and the latter also allows understanding, if that is the case, the sound will increase, because the former follows, and the latter also arises. If understanding "This is long," etc., is at the final stage, then at that time, because holding is without sequence, it will not become a sequential consciousness. If it becomes sequential by relying on the former, that is not right, because the former and later consciousnesses are different. However, if the first arising consciousness is the only one that remains, then that is also unreasonable, because after that the object does not exist. Consciousness itself does not exist. The unincreased sound does not exist at the time of increase. If that is the case, because the increase is other, it itself does not exist. However, even if it does not exist, it itself exists, then at that time, if it itself exists, from later, because there is no difference in holding
