If it is said that it exists in its own nature, then what is the so-called "ability"? If ability is experience itself, then at that time there is clearly awareness, how can there be no awareness? It both exists and does not exist, which is contradictory. Or, ability is different from awareness. Or, if it is the body itself, then when the body that produces the mind exists, because there is ability, it will not disappear. Or, the body that produces the mind has broken down, because something other than what produces the mind has arisen, so there is no mind, if you say so, then what is it that does not produce the mind? If it is said to be devoid of awareness, then it is also present in sleep, therefore, when waking up from sleep, there is also awareness, so it does not change. If it has breathing etc., then it is not the body that produces the mind. Then, when the state of sleep itself arises, it will not become sleep. Or, the mind arises from breathing etc. that arise together with complete sleep, if you say so, then what is sleep? If it is said to be without awareness, then it is also present at death, and when it completely changes, it will become awareness again. If it is said that because there is no breathing, it does not have all the conditions, therefore it does not arise solely from the body, if you say so, then in changes such as fainting, because there is no breathing etc., awareness will not exist. Therefore, breathing etc. are not the cause of awareness. Breathing etc. are the cause, this has been said before. Furthermore, if one is free from sleep, consciousness, from the previous consciousness's action, changes appear in that way, therefore the body is not the cause. Even if there are similar scriptures, consciousness etc. are regarded as the previous action and the subsequent view. Therefore, the body or breathing etc. are not the cause. Or, if it is said to arise from the body together with action, that is not right, because the action does not exist at that time, so it is difficult to arise together. Something that does not exist cannot arise together with something that exists. From having no mind, in the awakened state, like the body, the previous.

Mind is also non-existent. Non-existence is not a simultaneous occurrence, because there is no simultaneous action. Existence and non-existence do not occur together. Therefore, for that, the previous mind is the cause, not the body. So, how does striking and so on awaken? That is not the way, awakening is definitely not: born from striking and so on themselves. Even without violent striking, awakening is an object. Striking and so on themselves are not awakening, because they themselves also awaken. If, immediately after awakening, a conceptualization related to the seen object arises, then how are the seen and the previous consciousness simultaneous? That is also not good, like this: the one who abides awakens, this also has no certainty, because having been thrown there, one awakens from sleep. Having been thrown with focus, similar to the one who sleeps, the habit of this will awaken, and upon awakening, related to the object of focus, it is not perception. Just as habit is, changing in that way, one sees perception. Awakening is the nature of any touch and so on, whatever the habit is, it conforms to that, it is the tactile cognition of the body. For example: from fear and steadfastness and other formations, fruits and holding weapons and so on, the nature of the perception of happiness and so on, arises in beings. For those who have entered a house of habitual fear, awakening is the cognition of the nature of fleeing, happiness, and so on, otherwise they will remain in suffering. For those who clearly delight in harming others, who have a violent nature, the cause of harming others, the nature of holding weapons and so on, is the nature of perceiving happiness and so on. Therefore, the body or breathing and so on are not the cause of consciousness, the previous consciousness is the cause. Moreover, if it arises from the body, then at that time there would be the fault of irreversibility. Similarly, following the previous consciousness.
